We (me and my Mr.) decided to check out the Diamond Creek Road/Campground and we were not disappointed! (Disclaimer: We did not camp, we simply went down for a picnic.) Some updated tips for those wanting to visit. As previous people have mentioned, you MUST have a permit to travel down this road. And as previous people have mentioned, we went straight to the Hualapai Lodge to purchase this permit. The Lodge no longer sells the permits. Let me repeat this: THE LODGE NO LONGER SELLS DIAMOND CREEK PERMITS. To purchase your permits you must visit the Hualapai Game & Fish office. This office is located down the street from the lodge, next to the Post Office (rock building). Their office is not well marked and when we showed up (9:30 am), nobody was in the office and we waited about 30 minutes for someone to come back. No big deal, it gave us time to reapply sunscreen and hang out in the shade. Once we got our sightseeing permit, we were off. The road down to Diamond Creek is 22 miles of hard packed (washboard) dirt. In the future, we'll air down (let air out) the tires to make the ride a bit more comfortable. Don't expect to fly down this road. Respect the speed limit and keep the dust down for others. We were stopped by the Ranger checking our permit both on the way down and way back out. Don't even attempt to go down without a permit. It's not hard to obtain and they take cards (if you don't have cash on you). There was very little water to drive through until you get almost to the river where Diamond Creek crosses the road. (We went in August and there were no recent monsoon rains so everything is dry - this will not be the case other times of the year as the road crosses many obvious dry river beds. Check the weather.) Once at the bottom there is a lovely sandy area (including porta potties) at the bottom with shade structures. We were the only ones there and had the entire place to ourselves (very rare) as we just missed the bus leaving with the day's river rafters. It was absolutely gorgeous and a total treat to be in the Grand Canyon, toes in the Colorado River with our truck parked behind us. If you are heading down, be sure to respect the environment and pack out all your trash. Remember you are a guest of the Hualapai. We will definitely return to camp overnight. What a wonderful hidden gem!

I was able to do this road four years ago with a friend so I was excited to take my fiancé while in our way to Vegas. Unfortunately the road is currently closed. We spoke to the Hualapai Game and Fish Department and they confirmed the road closure and were not able to tell us when it would be open again. I gave it three stars only because I remember how spectacular this drive is and the people were very kind with giving us information.

This 22 mile dirt road down into the Grand Canyon West is a geologists dream come true. Easy access most of the year, the road drops 3000 feet in elevation to the bank of the mighty Colorado River. There is so much to see on the road as you traverse a large wash, and bolder strewn stream bed. We were treated to a sighting of three Rocky Mountain Sheep grazing right on the road. The road is very well maintained and can be accessed by most vehicles. YOU MUST PURCHASE A HUALAPAI TRIBAL PERMIT at the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs, AZ. before you drive the road. There is a small campground, and Picnic area at the bottom of the road. But you must have a permit to camp here. The Tribal Rangers are always present and friendly. This is the area where the river rafters take the rafts out at the end of their trip. The sound is amazing as the Colorado River flows through the canyon right at your feet. A BEAUTIFUL, Peaceful Place to visit.

One of the best campgrounds iv’e been to. You start out getting a permit from the Haulapai at the Haulapai Lodge before you start your 19 mile drive to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The scenery is amazing as you drive through the canyon as every turn give you another view. The road is frequently washed out so pay attention to the weather and bring extra food and water in case you get stuck for a day or 2. The Haulapai pay close attenton to the weather and will send someone to have you pack out and get to safety. Several shade canopies in the main camping area and one overlooking the River but the Beach is of limits to camping as the River Runners use it as a staging area for River Expeditions. The Ranger will check your papers for sure but once the Rafting patrons and crews leave around 1:00PM the ranger will make one last pass around 4:00pm and then you are all by yourself at the bottom of the Grand Canyon with the nearest help 20 miles up a millennials old river bed road! Tent camping but an Expedtion Trailer or Teardrop will make it down and 4 wheel drive is almost a must. Road is in fairly god condition but that can change in seconds.
