Yeghipatrush is a remote village in the province of Agaratsotn. To reach it, it's necessary to travel a few kms of a secondary road branching east of the M3 national road: that is, the road from Yerevan heading north and leading to the main border crossing between Armenia and Georgia.
Here the M3 travels a long stretch on a plateau of 2000 meters or even higher, dominated to the west by Mount Aragats, the highest peak in Armenia. Yeghipatrush (and therefore its church) is located in this same rural and austere environment, but in addition - as mentioned - it's far off the beaten track.
This has meant that the church, although valuable, has so far remained practically excluded from tourist circuits. And this has had the consequence (very appreciable in my eyes) that nothing on the church site is done to please the visitor: the church is fully embedded in the rural setting of the village, amidst modest peasant houses, barns and tractors. Two female villagers, who were resting naturally near a monastery wall as if it were an outbuilding of their home, were surprised by my presence and literally fled: which also lets us imagine how rare visitors are.
The church is certainly not in perfect conditions of conservation. In particular, the ceiling of the gavit (narthex) has completely collapsed: the gavit therefore appears today as a courtyard.
It's usually indicated as a strong peculiarity of this church the fact that two huge defense towers (moreover not in perfect condition) stand on the sides of the collapsed gavit.
The church itself is instead well preserved, and has the usual shapes of medieval Armenian churches: large cruciform central plan, which is superimposed by a cylindrical drum and a conical dome.
Overall, the many travelers traveling the M3 would do well to overlook the monastery church (and village itself) of Yeghipatrush.
