The Museum of the National Architecture and Urban Life is an absolute must-see if you're visiting Gyumri, Armenia. Nestled in one of the most culturally rich cities in Armenia, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle, traditions, and architectural elegance of 19th-century Gyumri.
The museum is housed in a stunning historic building that exudes the charm of the city’s unique architectural style. Walking through its beautifully preserved rooms feels like stepping back in time. The exhibitions showcase everything from period furniture and intricate decor to household tools and traditional costumes, all thoughtfully arranged to give visitors an authentic sense of urban life during Gyumri’s golden age.
One of my highlights was the reconstruction of the Armenian home interiors, vividly displaying the blend of practicality and artistry that defined the era. The knowledgeable guides added depth to the experience with engaging stories and insights about the local history, architecture, and cultural influences that shaped the city.

There's little of great interest in Gyumri, so inevitably your guide is looking for things to do - and that's how you end up in this museum.
Small museum with 2 sections : one showing daily utensils and crafts, the other one showing how the rich people lived.
To me, it felt like walking through a series of antique stores.

Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life at Gyumri is truly an amazing museum showcasing great displays and the amazing history of Gyumri and its people’s traditional trades and crafts. Ms. Anahid, our tour guide, took the time at each display and really did an outstanding job in explaining the artifacts and the history of Gyumri. Definitely, a good place to visit first when at Gyumri.

This is small and really takes about 15 minutes to walk through. I had a guide which helped understand and appreciate what I was seeing. Good view into the past culture.

This was a really disappointing experience and I left feeling quite upset and uncomfortable. The museum offers a guided tour (4000 dram for two people with entry included) but I only had a 20,000 dram note or 3500 dram in change. They couldn’t change the note (this is one of very few tourist attractions in Gyumri so you’d think they would keep some change) and wouldn’t accept the 3500 so, no tour and we were the only people there so it’s not like they were busy. Then, someone followed us all around the museum turning all of the lights behind us as we went. There was no need for us to be followed- everything was in glass cases so it’s not like we could have damaged anything and the person following us didn’t speak English so our experience was evidently not going to be enhanced by this. When we left a member of staff (not wearing a mask) followed us off the premises. If these people are looking to get more people into the museum, they are going the wrong way about it.
On the museum itself, there isn’t much information about anything in either Armenian, Russian or English. It’s very much a dusty objects in glass cases kind of place, which fail to bring Old Gyumri to life. This could really be improved with some interactive exhibits, a “spot the x” worksheet for kids or something...

The building itself, now a house-museum, is well-preserved and exhibits traditional trade and crafts with artefacts and displays focused on early urban life in Gyumri.
Exceptional displays including woodworking, embroidery, tinwork, silversmithing are well-presented.
An hour or so is a sufficient time to visit.
