Superb medieval city, splendid bay More!! Impassable for Pmr!

One night stay at B&B "MONTOITATOI" 27, rue Ponthieu 80320 Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme. Our friends already stayed there 3 times, so we liked to go with them. Two days of cycling (own), the second "accompanied" by heavy rains. Too bad. The B&B has only two rooms 'jaune et vert' and is operated by West Flanders Jan and Rita. Full breakfast included in the overnight price. Supper, prepared by the patron, is possible. We paid 25 € pp for this.

Visit of 05/09/24,
Access is quite difficult first of all, roundabouts + tourists = big traffic problems especially from Noyelles... so I strongly recommend getting there by train.
Parking is also a real pain, the free canal parking lot is full from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.... people park anyway. During the summer, I would be in favor of setting up a checkpoint with a supervisor and charging. Even in the city, parking is a miracle. Again, prefer the train.
Personally I advise parking on the outskirts (Carrefour Market, Intermarché or Lidl) and walking.
The town is however worth the detour because it is both on the banks of the Somme and then on the banks of the Bay. It also maintains a station on the Baie de Somme train route with maneuvers of old trains and steam trains which are always nice to see.
The fortifications are also an asset with an old gate and two-nave church.
The lanes a little further away from the quayside are also a plus which should benefit the locals in the summer. Don't miss the Calvary belvedere with for me the most beautiful view of Saint-Valery.
Finally, we should warn the manager of the boats in the bay to turn down his sound system, which can be heard throughout the city during excursions...
In conclusion: to go there, you have to be motivated... but it's worth it

This city is magnificent, take the time to visit all the streets, the church, the chapel, lots of little details in the architecture of the houses, gargoyles, flowers, heads etc.....

It is a tranquilizing, soothing, naturalistic walk off the beaten tourist track. This flows preferentially along the Bay of Somme and into the shopping streets of the city center.
The walk from the ramparts winds through the small cobbled and flowery streets of the heights of Saint Valéry. This walk is worth a little (but so little).
You will taste the pleasure of the old stone walls from which hang a few tufts of acrobatic heat-loving plants. These high walls ask us: but what is behind them? What are they hiding? Do they hide a castle, green meadows, vast pastures, flowery areas?
Knowing this would give less charm to this stroll, the interest of which lies in its capacity for suggestion. This walk arouses envy, curiosity, desire and that is all that a modern tourist worthy of the name should need, far from the true illusions of unreasonable consumption.
So, meander, meander without reason but in continuity.

We accessed the ramparts via the side of the church and seeing the nearby sea, and looking down at the height of the ramparts, you could feel a sense of the importance of these walls to the town.

The medieval town is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. Beautiful promenade and nice market. Lots of small restaurants, great bakeries. Very clean and lots of flowers.

A day in the Bay of Somme? Our choice fell on St Valéry-sur-Somme. Despite the summer period (August 16), we were able to walk along the bay quite easily (a small market was set up there), tread the sand of the beach, visit the typical streets, linger in the small shops selling local products, sit on a terrace around 1 p.m., without being jostled or trampled!
Very pretty village, typical with its cobbled streets, its houses with colorful facades, its ramparts.... The visit is worth the detour. even with young children in strollers.
Next stop: Cayeux-sur-Mer!
Long live the Bay of Somme!!
