Sunday 25th March we were in Thassos Port, awaiting the departure of our ferry to Keramoti. With time on our hands we walked outside the Port where we spotted this white marble sculpture.
It is stands on a grass patch on the Street, 18 IS Oktovriou, outside Thassos Port
The best way to see every aspect of the sculpture is to walk around all it's sides. On one side is the head and torso of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea. Carved into marble
are waves swirling around his waist. He is also holding his trident in one hand.
Abutting the figure of Poseidon is Aphrodite the Greek God of love and fertility. Again carved waves washing around her waist with a swimming dolphin swimming around her. In her hand is a flower with golden petals.
Behind Aphrodite, supporting her and Poseidon's long tresses are two dolphins with a grecian pillar behind them along with gold shells.
The sculpture stands on an oblong marble plinth, with an inscription on each side. On one side there is an inscription, in English, as follows:-
"Poseidon and Amphitrite
Dedicated to the six thousand Islands of the Hellenic Archipelago and the Hellenic Naval Forces".
