It was a long time that we wanted to visit it and we took advantage of a visit to the excavations of Ostia antica, whose ticket includes the entrance to the Rocca. From the outside the castle is very beautiful but inside there is not much except for some wall paintings on the staircase. Arrived on the patrol path there is a view of the village.

I would like to point out that I did not contact whoever manages it first. I find it ridiculous to say the least to have installed a small ramp at the entrance to the castle where there is a step when to get there it is necessary to go down a steep flight of stairs as the entrance is many meters below the current street level. Simply put, the castle is inaccessible for wheelchair users.

The village of Ostia Antica is very pretty, we went on March 1st so entry to the castle was free, there isn't much to see, on the street level the unrestored part is the most interesting even if there are no signs with the explanations, the upper floors are used as a museum; You can visit the tower where you can enjoy a beautiful view.

The Castle of Julius II 🏰 in Ostia is very worthy, the first stop on our recent trip to Roman land. Having arrived on site at 11.00 🕚 after a short breakfast break ☕️🥐 nearby, we showed the tickets (purchased in advance online 📱) thus starting our visit from the basement of the fortress 🏰. These spaces are particular, although bare, and were once used as prisons. From here the recommended route ➡️ leads to the upper floors passing through the internal courtyard, where some stone finds were placed 🪨. Via the large white staircase, magnificently frescoed, you first reach the floor dedicated to the historiographical introduction of the castle, where you can consult various didactic panels 🪧 which comprehensively illustrate to the visitor the vicissitudes of the structure; Furthermore, there is no shortage of numerous finds ⚱️ displayed in special display cases. Going further up you then access a beautiful lounge with fine tables and, finally, the splendid panoramic terrace. There is ample space available and the lace is well looked after along the patrol walkway; from here it is also possible not only to access the large circular tower, but also to enjoy a suggestive view 👁 of the surrounding village and the nearby Roman archaeological site 🏛. The order service is guaranteed by some elderly people 👴🏻🧓🏻, I imagine volunteers, equipped with a bib bearing the header of a Carabinieri association. The staff members were kind and friendly, especially the ladies 👩🏻👩🏼🦱 in charge of surveillance of the internal courtyard. I don't know the price of the single ticket 🎫 since, well in advance, we had purchased the cumulative one for 19 euros 💶 which also included access to the aforementioned Archaeological Park 🏛, to the Imperial Ports of Cludio and Traiano, to the Necropolis of Porto and to the Museum of the Ships of Fiumicino (by the way, it was really a shame not to be able to visit everything). A separate review would be necessary on the enchanting village of Ostia Antica, of which the castle 🏰 is an integral part. Unfortunately, there is no real dedicated parking area 🅿️, but we found a makeshift one nearby. Visit certainly RECOMMENDED 👍.

Just east of the archaeological area of the Roman city and close to the ancient village (so much so that to enter the castle you must first cross the walls of the small village) there is this turreted manor house with a triangular plan built in the second half of the 15th century by Giuliano della Rovere (when he was still cardinal), incorporating a fortress present since the Middle Ages to protect the village. The castle underwent subsequent transformations in the 16th century but already during the 17th century it fell into abandonment (along with the adjacent village); in the 18th century it was used as a barn and in the following century as a prison, for the prisoners who worked in the excavations of the Roman city. During the 20th century it underwent several restorations and at the beginning of the year 2000 it became a museum and therefore open to visits. Externally it is undoubtedly beautiful to look at, it is in apparently perfect condition and makes an impression. Internally, there are few rooms that can be visited (essentially 3 small rooms on the first floor, then a large room on the second floor, on the level of the terraces, and a room in the keep) and mostly (first floor and keep) contain display cases with the ceramics found in the excavations of the castle and the village; some pieces of frescoes are still visible along the staircase that leads from the internal courtyard to the upper floors. However, a visit to the dungeons on the ground floor and the terraces/walkways, with a view of the village below, is certainly very interesting. If you combine the visit of the nearby archaeological area of the Roman city (which takes a long time) with that of the castle, it should be taken into account that the latter closes at 4pm (at least in the period in which we made the visit: November).

We visited the Castle as we waited to for the Ostia Antica golf cart. It's down the road and across the street, about a 7 min walk. It's worth looking at if you already bought your archeological park ticket (Cost about 19 Euro) and it includes the Castle. The courtyard entrance to the Castle is very picturesque - what you imagine a traditional Italian courtyard to be. It was a nice surprise. I went with my elderly mom and she had a bit of a hard time climbing up to the top - not necessarily steps, but the incline can feel steep if you have mobility issues.
After we quickly looked inside the Castle we were curious about the year the Castle was built. What a mistake to ask the gal at the ticket box! She was very rude! She replied by asking what country we were from. When I replied the USA, she decided to be snarky and commented about how Americans know nothing about World History. She continued her judgment by attacking our educational system. It was quite appalling. Here I was making the effort to learn more about what I was seeing, and she had some silly expectation that this Castle (and all Italian history for that matter) should be part of the history lessons in the US!
I simply replied that it was asking too much and that perhaps Italians were stuck knowing about the past while in the USA we're focused on the future. She truly brought out the worst in me as I typically try to have a cultural understanding of the places I visit, but I was so taken aback by the rudeness that I wish I hadn't bother to visit the place.

It is a small castle that stands about 300 meters from the excavations of Ostia Antica. Inside is a miserable museum with some broken ceramics and some frescoed ceilings without particular art.
The mosaic on display is noteworthy, although it comes from the excavations of Ostia. However, €7 for a ticket seems really excessive to me

È nel borgo di Ostia antica , vicino agli scavi .

Walking around each little corner to see something new was great, enjoyed the views from the top. The artifacts that were recovered was cool to read about. Price is affordable.

Gentile Alessandra, non ricordo il costo del biglietto perchè nell'occasione eravamo in quattro e non ho pagato io. Ti consiglio di informarti della reale possibilità di accedere al castello che ultimamente è stato chiuso per lavori e che, comunque, ha orari a volte 'ballerini', forse dipendenti dalla luna di chi è incaricato dell'accoglienza al momento. Ad ogni modo il borghetto che gli sta intorno è carino ed ha un discreto punto di ristoro. Ma, sopratutto, a pochi metri di distanza troverai l'area archeologica di Ostia Antica che sicuro non ti deluderà. Buona visita ! alfredodenicolais
