Thomas Stone is an obscure historical figure. He signed the Declaration of Independence for Maryland, helped equip a Maryland regiment and spent most of the rest of his life caring for his ailing wife and then dying young himself. His relative obscurity was ironically cited by the NPS ranger as the reason why his homestead is a historic site, allowing for visitors to hear about the “unknown history” of American independence. Along with those stories, there’s the Stone house, an interesting modular style residence, and a few outbuildings and short hiking paths. It’s free, not crowded and not hard to get to just a few miles from a major road, but the NPS “brand” was the curiosity draw for me and I would not have visited it otherwise.

Nice displays in visitor's center. A very tour guide in the park ranger. We learned a lot about Thomas Stone and his home and family.

My partner is related to the Stones. The park ranger was helpful and seemed passionate about Thomas and the house. We didn't have time to do a tour but enjoyed walking the grounds. Everybody actually wore masks inside, which was refreshing and appreciated.

Was an amazing stop here where you got to tour the house and learn about Thomas stone a lesser known signer of the declaration. The tour guide was very informative and a pleasure to talk with.

I really enjoyed my visit to this site. The highlight is David Lassman who is a full time ranger here. We met David at Washington’s birthplace in the spring. He is such a wealth of knowledge. We knew we wanted to see him at Thomas Stone. Fortunately for us, we were traveling home from Williamsburg on the last day of the season. Thomas Stone is closed all January and February and is only open Thursday- Sunday the rest of the year.
Thomas Stones house is lovingly restored. According to David it is one of the most historically accurate sites run by the NPS. It was also one of the first to be ADA accessible. David tells the story of Thomas Stones role in signing the Declaration of Independence. He focuses on Mr Stones love of family. I highly recommend this site. The visitor center is also very nice and has an introductory movie.

We visited the home of Thomas Stone near Port Tobacco MD. He was one of MD signers of the a Declaration of Independence
It includes a tour of his home. We got our tour by Ranger Dave who was fabulous. He was so interesting and knowledgeable about this era in history.
There is an excellent visitor center with additional information
Do not miss it.

A park ranger guided us through the house and told the story of Thomas Stone. The house is small but authentically decorated. Stone was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A modest but thoughtful man, a type of leader we could use more. An excellent video in the Visitor Center is an informative introduction to the site and person.

One of the properties under the national park system, it pays homage to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Much of the original building burned down about 50 years ago.
There is a short video available to watch- just ask the park ranger at the visitor center
Worth a stop if in area

Thomas Stone isn't exactly someone that made his way into the history books like some of his other contempoaries at the time. Others certainly gained more celebrity while Thomas quietly did his part and is now forever immortalized by being a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The NPS site features him and his home that is set out in 'the middle of nowhere'. Even in December it was a pleasant drive. The site is seldom visited and it helps give the area its charm.
With the family, we parked our cars and busted out the strollers, stopping by the visitor's center first to let the kids touch some fur pelts and check out the small store before exiting the back to walk the trail that led to Thomas Stone's house. When we arrived, there was a pleasant ranger that gave us a 20-30 minute tour of his home, describing the way of life in the 1700's and the life of Thomas Stone. It was very informative, although our young kids were getting a little restless at the end.
We spent some time walking the grounds, passing the family gravesite and walking through some other trails. All-in-all a great side-trip while travelling home from vacation and I'm glad that we were able to check another NPS site off the list.

Overall I am glad the NPS has this property, as it is a good reminder of an estate from the revolutionary period. The house is the highlight of the park, with access only via guided tours (but no set schedule, just when people are ready to go). There were walking paths on the property that we didn't have time to use but looked nice. But that's it. Otherwise the park is not really developed at all. Local staff seem to take some pride in that, saying it keeps the crowds down so people can ask questions. That is true, but I would also say that our enthusiastic guide of the house spent more time on revolutionary / civil war history and not as much on Thomas Stone or his property. Visit here if you're in the area or looking to check another NPS site off your list. Otherwise you'll learn far more about the time period at bigger parks such as Mt. Vernon or any of the Boston sites. One disclaimer though... the rangers sure are pro-Maryland's role in independence, so you will pick up a unique perspective from that standpoint.
