We went to the fort on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't busy. There were a couple living history performers about and they were very interesting. The fort looked in great shape and the trails out to it and back to the Visitor Center were excellent. The walk was easy and the trees appeared to be old growth and very impressive. The VC was under some sort of construction, so we did have to deal with that, but it looks like it will be really nice when it is completed. It's a NPS site, so it is definitely worth a look as they always do an excellent job preserving or representing history.

We had visited Fort Clatsop 20 years ago and it did not look like something pioneers would have built. That fort has since burned down and it has been replaced by a fort that now looks right. The park service is not certain the location is correct, but they believe it is within 6 miles of where the fort would have been. A visit to this fort is definitely worthwhile.

There are plenty of small exhibitions regarding native people, flora & fauna, European settlement, and more. You get to see the reconstructed structure as well. Highly educational.

Fort Clatsop is the reconstructed winter fort of Lewis and Clark. The guides working were costumed for the period and happy to answer even the sometimes strange questions of young children while also being knowledgeable enough to answer the detailed questions of adults. The museum on-site is small but informative - primarily about the Lewis and Clark exploration but also the Native people.

I have been fascinated with Lewis and Clark since the 4th grade. It was so beautiful and the film was very educational. They are undergoing renovations right now (Aug 23) so there are well-marked pathways to walk. The gift shop was really nice, too. The people working there were very helpful.

Fort Clatsop - The Lewis and Clark National Park is actually one of the newer National Parks in America, and well worth the trip up the Oregon coast to the Astoria area. In this park one will experience learning about the end of the Journey of Discovery.
We were able to see an excellent presentation by one of the park’s interpretive guides named Jayden. He was very entertaining, and had quite a knowledge base regarding some of the history of the indigenous people and members of the expedition. There were others interpretive guides at the fort as well. This would definitely be a fun NP visit for families as we saw a group of young folks participating in the NP Junior Ranger Program.

I teach, so this is was really cool to actually be able to see and be in the spot Lewis and Clark reached their destination. Have always talked about it and did activities, but now it’s more meaningful! We really enjoyed walking the easy trails to points of interest. We even participated in “trying” to make fire! Didn’t succeed, but it was fun trying! Definitely a place I would recommend. Oh! The museum was small but very educational and interesting!

Our family went there with my elderly father, my sister and her husband and my niece and nephew. So educational. I love real-life history that helps you imagine how they lived, the dangers and physical challenges they faced. They had real cabins, and bunks with the same types of furs they used. It is hard to imagine how they could sleep like that. I am grateful for the practical application of real-life history in my back yard. It makes me feel connected to my home more. My Brother-in-law is a High School History teacher, and he LOVED it.

I have read about Lewis and Clark for many years. And there it was, history I could touch. The visitors center was full of information and displays recounting their adventures. Outdoors was the fort and the area where the me n spent their time. It was cold, wet, and rainy.. And we froze on our walkabout in the area. Sort of a realistic historic experience.
This probably isn't for everyone, but if you are into Lewis and Clark, come see this.

It was too wet to take the the trail to the actual site. But on a cold, wet day I wouldn't have picked this site to spend the winter, but I'm not Lewis and Clark.

We had a driver who waited in the Car for us. I believe they charged for parking but we didn’t pay as he was with the car

I agree with the other people who have responded. Check the web site or call them for the current schedule. We went at a time when the visitor center was open and volunteer re-enactors answered questions. I thought that added a lot to our experience. It's a small place, so the added information was well worth it.

Was planning on a trip to Oregon coast in March. Is this an ok time to visit? I was worried about the weather and roads being closed. Should we plan it for April?

March is still pretty cold and wet, April is a tad warmer but the Oregon coast is always pretty cool no matter when you go. between the two months I would choose April just because March is still winter and you can get some icy roads. April will be wet, however so plan on warm clothing and umbrellas.

how can I get from the cruise ship pier 1 to Fort Clatsop? Is there any public transportation or tours?

You might contact the Astoria visitor center to see if they know of a shuttle or tour. Otherwise, taxi. I don't know if Astoria has Uber yet.
