So interesting! Just happened to find this when in Philly a few days last year. Loved seeing the oddities and learning how they came to be. Didn’t make it back this last trip but hope to go again soon!

I have been wanting to visit The Mutter Museum for years and it finally happened. It was an amazing experience and everything I had hoped it would be.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, exhibits were very informative, and the building was beautiful.

This is an excellent museum, my second time there. It doesn't take long to review everything; about an hour. Fascinating medical anomalies, and Mutter is a man to admire. However.... politics seem to have invaded the Museum. The new exhibit about the Great Influenza of 1914 is really weak; it could have been so much more powerful and educational. The sheer number of deaths--600+--were more than all of WWI. And why is that? The exhibit suggests "Don't Spit" and even has dodads in the gift shop to this effect. What they steer clear of is the fact that like our last Administration, the president nullified the importance of the pandemic. Woodrow Wilson wanted young men to serve as soldiers for WWI, and so avoided public information about containing the pandemic. This resulted in a massive spread worldwide of the virus. Sound familiar? I was very disappointed that this exhibit avoided the truth. And why was it called the Spanish flu? It is believed to have started in Kansas in the barracks of these young soldiers, who were then shipped east, and then on to Europe. Spain was one of the only countries to speak the truth and publicize info about the virus and how to contain it. I thought medicine was about science and facts? This exhibit really missed a chance to educate. Still, the Museum itself is excellent.

A really unique museum exhibit located in one of Philadelphias oldest buildings! The building alone is worth seeing- simply majestic. This medical museum may be in the smaller side but it’s JAM packed with lots to see, read & check out! Full of skeletons, skulls, medical oddities, fetus’s, jars of organs, and lots to learn for the curious!
Tips:
- pre order your tickets!! They are $20.
- there are two paid parking lots right behind/near the building which is nice for downtown Philly!
- don’t bring any big bags- it’s tight in the exhibit! They do offer coat check for free and 25 cent lockers!
- check out the fun medical themed gift shop!
Trigger warning:
- just wanted to note that some of the fetus exhibit area may be triggering for folks. It can be hard to digest but remember this is a science museum to teach people things. Just wanted to note that this might be hard for some folks to see fully REAL fetus’s, infants etc on display
Please remember to be respectful and NOT TAKE PHOTOS in the exhibit as these are real human remains donated to the passion of science- not to be taken photos of from tourists. They do keep an eye on folks and WILL say something if they see you snapping photos.

I thought it was fantastic. Went with my friends and we are all trained historians/museum professionals. Thought the displays were fascinating and the museum tackled hard subjects with grace. Particularly noted the memorial outside to all of the subjects. The gift shop was also great. Would definitely recommend a trip here. There’s nothing else like it.

Facinating collection of important medical artifacts and publications housed in a stunning 19th century setting. The anatomical specimens are not for the faint of heart, but I skipped them altogether and still managed to find plenty to see in the space of an hour and a half. Excellent presentation on the Spanish Flu (Spit Spreads Death),and the awful irony of a parade held to commerate the 17k Philadelphians who perished 1918-19, being held just three months prior to the Covid outbreak.

Highly recommend for everyone in the medical field! Everything I have studied in PA school I was able to see preserved so delicately. It really helped to bring perspective to the challenges patients face with various conditions.

I have been to this museum twice before, as a student nurse and as a practicing RN, I found it so informative and learned about diseases that I may have never seen in years of nursing. I took my 14 y.o. granddaughter today, who is trying to decide her career path, hoping I might sway her to medicine. I promoted this display as it's going to be so interesting, it will inspire you. Instead, it was two floors of dimly lit space that were hard to visualize.
Unlike how I felt when I was young and enthusiastic, I now feel that these displays are so wrong. Who are the family of the gigantism skeleton. What about Chang and Eng's ancestors? Who were the parents of the conjoined fetuses in a jar?

The Barnes Foundation and next to it the Rodin Sculpture Museum were both very good and just a bit north of the Mutter

Do I need to get tickets in advance for a weekday visit in September? Don't know if they limit the number of people.

I don’t believe so. We visited in peak vacation season over the Fourth of July holiday and were able to get in without a problem by just walking in. I don’t know if they have a daily limit or not.

We spent about three hours there. I read every single description and story they provided and lingered over several of the artifacts. The whole place is fascinating.

Hi Lisa! What time of day did you go? We are planning a Saturday visit which I am regretting after reading your review. We won't get there until after 2pm so we are thinking it won't be as crowded.

Like I said it's not for everyone. I notice your from Gettysburg when I went I think they had a special event dealing with civil war injuries I don't know if that runs all the time. It is crowded but it moves I went about 3ish after the zoo. I'll just be quick and explain : in the civil war section they had on display a shattered wrist bone where it was hit with a musket ball. I hope you enjoy it when you go just because I may not have liked it doesn't mean you won't either

Is photography allowed
MutterMuseum
Philadelphia, Pensilvanya
Photography is not allowed in the main museum galleries due to the sensitive nature of the collection. Visitors may take photos in the main lobby (there is a 'selfie station') plus the art gallery and the medicinal garden.

How long should I allow to visit the museum?

1- to 2 hours is probably fine. Although the museum is small it is very reading intensive. How engaging different exhibits are will depend on the visitor. I would also suggest bringing a magnifying glass with you. It can really help. And I agree with Carl B--light clothing and comfortable shoes.

Is there parking on premises for this museum? If so, is it free? If not, what would you suggest in the way of parking for visitors?

There is not. There are parking garages within walking distance. Price varies depending on the length of time that you leave your car.
