There are five short trails. The first one wonders through the woods and down to a creek. The others are all pretty short. Nice family day

My daughter just moved to Stafford and we were up for a visit. Googled things to do and found this hidden gem. Nice drive there. Five different areas to drive to in this park and at each one you park and take a nice walk through the woods. There are replicas from the war and information boards and signs marking points of interest. There is a picnic gazebo at one of the stops with a bathroom, didn't check to see if it was open. There are also other marked hiking trails that we didn't explore. Not wheelchair or stroller friendly but I did see dogs on leashes. It's free!

This site is representative of many winter quarter sites built in Virginia during the Civil War. Some were better than these, some worse. You'll enjoy the walks and the informative signage, see actual foundations of huts, reproduced cannons, trenches, and other evidence of life here during the winter of 1862. Although there were many such camps, most have been built over or farmed, so this original site is a treasure.

If you are interested in Civil War history, this will be a great little campsite to check out and experience as well as what you can interact with, I hope you will surprised as I was and I am not a historian, by any means. My wife likes to take our dog and walk the many paths that around the campsite and park as well.

With all the Civil War battlefields the state of Virginia has, a place like this goes often overlooked. This isn't an all day activity, but it certainly isn't something you should rush through either.

It is really neat to see the remains of the camp of Union soldiers that were in the area in the winter of 1862-1863. The signs located throughout the park are simple, but informative.

Note: There are bathrooms on site which is a plus!

I love all the different trails and walks through the woods, especially the walk down to the creek. All the Civil War remnants are amazing..the batteries, corduroy road and building remains..a history buff's dream!! It's a great place tp get some exercise outdoors and learn some American history at the same time!

I just happened to notice this little park on a map so we decided to go and explore. This part of Virginia has huge battlefields and is steeped in Civil War history but the fact that this was the Union winter encampment is probably not as nc well known. Nice trails to walk in the fall with signage about a quarry and gun fortifications. We actually met one of the men instrumental increating the park out of donated funds. He was there working on building a mud hut. What dedication. It looks like they are building restrooms and a picnic pavillion. A nice place to walk and enjoy its history.

If you're a history geek, you'll be at home here. Site of the "Army of the Potomac's Valley Forge" in 1863. Remnants of the Union double corduroy road are here along with three artillery emplacements and interior communication lines. Aqua Landing is just down the road to help put the Union logistics juggernaut in perspective. Highly recommended, a must see for the Civil War buff.
