If you are visiting New Brunswick, you can’t miss seeing or hearing the word ‘Rutgers’; it’s everywhere, as is the big red R on many businesses and services. The city is of course home to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The New Brunswick campus (and the facilities in nearby Piscataway) dominates town life, and its huge student population brings a lively and youthful atmosphere to an otherwise fairly dull town. It’s an old university, chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, with the ‘Rutgers’ name appearing in 1825. It’s the second oldest university in the state of New Jersey, after nearby Princeton University. It’s a prestigious research university these days. The university has 4 campuses in various locations; this review relates specifically to the campus in New Brunswick.
The most historic and interesting part of the university lies in the two blocks contained by Somerset Street. College Avenue, Seminary Place, and George Street. Enter by the Old Queens Gatehouse on the corner of Somerset and George and follow the path up the hill and you will be in the heart of the campus’s historic area. You will find the Kirkpatrick Chapel, built in 1873 in the High Victorian Gothic Revival Style. Beside it is the beautiful and aesthetically pleasing Old Queens Building, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1809 by a black slave called Will. A plaque on the Hamilton Street side of the building honour this. This building was originally named the Queen’s College Building. It is the oldest building at Rutgers and the symbolic heart of the university. In this location you’ll find the Geology Hall (with a museum), Van Nest Hall, and Winants Hall which dates back to 1890. Across Hamilton Street and through a nicely manicured lawn area you will find the Zimmerli Art Museum; opposite this prestigious art gallery is the graceful New Jersey Hall. Further along are more graceful buildings such as Murray Hall, Milledoler Hall, and Van Deck Hall. These grounds also contain a number of memorials and monuments, including a statue of William The Silent, and a memorial to the Vietnam War.
But do take a walk along the main university thoroughfare, College Avenue. You’ll spot the Alexander Library, the lovely Huntington House, the spires of a number of churches, and various old houses containing fraternity and sorority houses. There’s plenty of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants along College Avenue, as well as a number of stores selling university clothing and memorabilia.
I have enjoyed a number of walks through this campus, and recommend it of you are visiting New Brunswick.

OK, there are four campuses. Cook-Douglas is probably my favorite from a beauty standpoint but they are all nice. Worth spending a little time walking around.

My family and I live in the vicinity of the university NB Downtown and we enjoy the beautiful and impressive sights of both historical and modern buildings. An excellent school in lovely atmosphere of open green spaces and huge trees. Also a convenient place where shops, restaurants, Starbucks cafe are all locating within short walking distance. Love this beautiful university!

Wear comfortable walking shoes as this is a huge campus. There are multiple buildings - most of which are connected internally. Some of them are not and require walking outside. So if you are going in the winter time, dont forget your jacket, there is a lot of open space. Parking is available in plenty. Use the Rutgers web page to locate where you are going and park nearby. Excellent college and great atmosphere.

This a good university. As a tourist site, your success will be determined by why you are visiting:
1. This is a first rate academic institution. It became the State university after many years of being a private college
2. There are 5 campuses. New Brunswick (Rutgers College) Douglas/Cook, Busch and Livingston. Rutgers College in New Brunswick is the original college. Was all men until 1972. It has most of the old buildings and some of them are good for a tourist. Old Queens is the original building. The Zimmerli Art Gallery is a prime stop. You stop to see the statue of Willie the Silent. The Douglas Campus is the old Women's College at the other end of town. It has many quaint buildings and is the Home of the Kilmer Oak, the subject of the Joyce Kilmer poem Trees/ The Cook campus is the old Ag. School that has a working College Farm. The Livingston campus is on the former grounds of Camp Kilmer, a large Army camp built during WWII. Some of the original Army buildings still exist. This campus and Busch are across the River in Piscataway. The Busch Campus is the home of the Medical School and High Point Solutions Stadium.
3. Parking all over the campuses is difficult especially I New Brunswick
4. High Point Solutions stadium is home of the worst Big Ten Football team. Nice stadium, but if you go to the games be prepared for high ticket prices, lot's of obnoxious drinkers and high priced concessions

We’re used to a centralized campus, so we were surprised by the dispersed, urban feel of the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick. We were disappointed that there was no clearly marked visitor center or directions to one. We did find our way to the “Queens Campus Gates” and a few historic buildings. Too bad we weren’t guided to information to help us appreciate the campus. We might have stayed longer, spent some money there.

My daughter has returned for her 3rd year doing a course of vetenary science, she has never been away on her own but since being at Rutgers she has "come out of her shell" her results are fantastic which has a bearing on the universities way of teaching, the "uni" covers a vast area and has virtually everything a student would need.
any parents or student who would like to go to Rutgers should make every opportunity to visit

Can anybody help me with a logistics question? I am strongly considering coming to a Rutgers football game this year, but would like to stay in NYC to experience that as well. Am I crazy? Is it even possible to get from point A to point B? If so, what is the recommended method? Any idea on timing?
Any helpful information would be appreciated!

You can take the Train from NYC to Downtown New Brunswick and then take a Rutgers bus (free) to the game.
