Our guide Leah was very knowledgeable about all the birds at the centre, and allowed us into the cages to get up close to some of them. Quite difficult to find so could benefit from more prominent signage and advertising.

I had high hopes for this place but I am sad to say that i was disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, It’s great for the birds that they managed to rehabilitate and release, and the ones that are saved who have a chance to live in the wild in the future. But the ones that live in the enclosures, unable to return to the wild and serving the purpose of educating the public, don't have it so good. I am not a bird expert, so i did some research before i wrote this review. Even if you simply google any respectable zoo(not that i am a fan of zoos), and compare with what a large raptor enclosure looks like, you will note that at the centre, no serious effort has been made for their cages to look like what they would have in the wild. The cages are also significantly smaller both in width as well as hight. I realise that most of these birds cannot fly because they are injured, are not able to hunt (they are fed meat) and a couple of them even live alone in their cage so they are basically deprived of any stimulation they would have if they were free. There is certainly plenty of space on the land for a more adequate-spaced facility.
The last enclosure was the most miserable of all. A one-wing pelican, a Marabou stork and 6 or sever large raptors all together in a barren cage (just dust on the ground and some brunches for them to climb on) that looked way too small. We were allowed to enter their cage, and the woman gave us sticks and gloves to touch the raptors and deter them if they attack our shoes or fingers. We were also let in the owls’ cages, and the birds were hissing, clearly disturbed, another male with a broken wing who kept his eyes closed at all times was shaking with fear. It was heartbreaking. Finally, Phill, the ‘imprinted’ owl as she called him, who grew up with humans, always with a leach tied on his foot, was brought outside for us to pet. She poked him first on the ear, telling us that this is his called ear-tubs. She then touched the bristles around his eyes, to explain they deter dust, and that bird did not look happy. when she touched him again he tried to bite her. Frankly, the enclosures part of this sanctuary, are just like a petting zoo, and currently, educating people about wildlife should not include interacting in this way. In contrast, I visited the Colobus monkey sanctuary also this month, which also aims to increase their population. None of that stuff was happening there, i felt like the animals were well cared for and respected.
I would urge people to go the Raptor Sanctuary, see the birds and ask the questions i regret not asking. My humble opinion is that they are doing something good, but they are not doing it like it’s 2022.

One morning we made a trip to The Raptor Centre. We were met by a young man whose name I have forgotten I’m afraid. He impressed me so much he knew all the birds by name, related the history of why they ended up there. The birds all seemed to love him even the vultures who all came to him to be petted. I should mention the wonderful work they do there saving the lives of these birds. I loved all the different Owls . Well wort a visit to learn more about the beautiful residents.

Visiting here has been an amazing and quite eye-opening experience. Though I knew that vultures were a very important part of the natural environment, I never imagined that I'd find them intelligent birds that interacted with you and even seemed playful.
The reasons for most of the birds being brought here are very unfortunate and one can only hope that the educational and lobbying efforts of the Centre will be fruitful in reducing these drastically.
Until then, the rescue and breeding work is enormously important and I wish them the very best.
