We took a round trip from Darjeeling to Ghum and back on the train. There are 2 options - a steam engine train (more expensive) and a diesel engine train. Both leave from Darjeeling station almost at the same time and reach Ghum also immediately after the other. The full round trip takes 2 hours - but worth the journey. There is a stop at Batasiya Loop for 15 minutes en route Ghum. The halt at Ghum is about 20 minutes. Recommended that you book tickets at least a day in advance on the IRCTC website.

I was so excited to take a ride on this toy train, but got totally disappointed after taking it. Earlier I had a ride on toy train in Shimla. I am giving my view point and it is nothing close to the one in Shimla. Even the ticket is on higher side. The views are of no match at all. Total waste of money and time.

AWFUL!! World Heritage my foot. WAS NOT worth it to spend 9000 rs for 6 people. Reasons:
• Unhygenic - had banana peels
and kulad glasses all over the
floors. And the floor was filled with
dirt.
• Filled with mosquitos and weird
bugs.
• Seats, window locks and handles
broken/torn.
• The train just traveled on the road
and no scenic view was visible.
• The train was delayed by 2 hours.
• Wasted my whole day and was not
able to visit any tourist place apart
of the dirty railway station.
• The only thing the train was best at
is noise and air pollution. ( I went
on a steam train)
• Got a headache from all the
unnecessary horns.
• The train had SPIDERS from like
Australia or smtg.
I do not recommend to visit this overhyped place. Go to Shimla if you want a FAR better experience. Or just atleast remove this as one of the world Heritage places for the sake of the reputation of Indians/India at least.

We took the Darjeeling toy train from DHR and back which is a 2 hour journey by diesel or steam engine. We took the diesel version and the coaches were like vista dome providing a 360 degree view. The scenes are beautiful and you get to experience the legendary toy train rode with a visit to Batasia loop and Ghum station.

Initially I was cribbing about the high price of the ticket but at the end of the day, I must admit it was an amazing experience and payment of Rs 1500/- per passenger didn't go waste. Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) consists of a small ( Narrow Gauge) single line from Darjeeling all the way to New Jalpaiguri but tourists usually
undertake the joy ride (round trip from Darjeeling to Ghum and back). This joy ride is a must do thing while you are in Darjeeling particularly if you have kids in your group. Even for adults it is real fun traversing through the town - at times almost as if piercing THROUGH the buildings on the road - very much reminiscent of Kolkata trams. The round trip of Darjeeling - Ghum - Darjeeling takes around 100 mts. The train stops at Batasia Loop for 20 mts and for 15 mts at Ghum, which happens to be the highest Rail station in India. Batasia Loop is an excellent place for photography offering panoramic views of the Darjeeling city from a height. At Ghum, you can visit the small Rail Museum built at the station itself, have snacks and tea and click photographs. There are some heritage wagons and coaches, selfie points and a heritage Steam Loco where you can get clicked posing as a train driver ! Alternatively, you can visit the Ghum Monastery which is a little way up from the station and you have to walk brisk to cover it within the 15 mts stoppage time. Normally they attach only 2 coaches and the first coach in the UP direction becomes the rear coach in DN after loco reversal at Ghum. Production of Steam engines has been stopped by Indian Railways but at this UNESCO heritage site, you can witness first hand how they actually coal the fire and operate a Steam loco - a unique experience.

If you are visiting Darjeeling, then do not miss to book your tickets on IRCTC from Darjeeling to Darjeeling!
This is close to a 1.5 hour travel with close to 2 stops (20 mins each approx). The train travels through the streets of Darjeeling and it's a must try experience! The ticket costs INR 1000 each approx.

It's larger than what I'd call a "toy" train although not full size. As you ride up into Darjeeling you can see the tracks criss-crossing the road, cutting across the hairpin bends and in places support on pillars outside the road itself. It's quite an engineering masterpiece getting the track up the hill.
The tourist train tends to be steam driven but you'll see other trains pulled by diesel engines too.
It's not an amazing ride but it's a bit of nostalgia.

We did the short route, which lasts an hour, but we would have really liked to do the 8-hour one, it leaves the center of the city and goes up along the side of the road, from time to time it crosses, it is amazing, a must see....

Worst experience ever !! Not recommended
Booked to board the toy train from Ghum station for a distance of 45min, but it was delayed by 9 hours. We have to board the train @3pm and it arrived at 09:30pm. It was also acceptable if the station master has allowed to board another toy train of same destination; station master denied that as well. People are not helpful but are very soft and sweet voice tone.

Complete waste of time. You pay a fortune to travel across the town and back! Having visited Batasia Loop the day before, I couldn't find one spot along the entire route, worth photographing.
Other than the novelty value of having travelled in a steam engine drawn narrow gauge train, I found nothing to write about....

Hi I will be travelling from Darjeeling to njp on the toy train with my family ..in 1st class I will hve 2 suitcase and two duffle bags ..is thrs space to keep..the luggage
Also does this coach has a toilet ?
And are the seat comfortable ..are they 2*2 or 2*1 seating layout ..
Pls let know
Yazıldığı tarih: 27 Eylül 2021
Do not carry any luggage. Absolutely no space for for suitcases! Unless you purchase a seat for it. There are no toilets on the train, only at the station. Seats are not comfortable for long rides but since it’s short it’s OK. Yes two seats on each side. Bring ear plugs if you have young kids.

I was ready to buy two tickets for the Toy Train (First Class, Steam) but it offers me four different seating (berth?) options: Upper, Lower, Cabin and Coupe. What are the differences? Which one would you recommend?

I plan to be 1st May in Darjeeling. What time of the day would be better to take the Joy Ride DJ to DJRZ (Steam), 9:15, 11:30 or 13:50?
Yazıldığı tarih: 28 Ocak 2020
9:15 ride would be perfect. As it allows you to view the majestic Kanchenjunga clearly.

Hello All,
I have four confirmed tickets for Darjeeling Toy train on 28th November, 2019.
Unfortunately my wife due to some of her official work will not be able to make this journey. Hence I want to take my brother in her place.
My question is do we need to change the name ? If yes, what is the process ?
Would be really thankful for any suggestions.
Yazıldığı tarih: 5 Kasım 2019
Actually toy train is governed by IRCTC norms so please ask at the counter but they seldom check the tickets they just make a head count. But it's safe to change the name or buy a new ticket.

I'm trying to book this train on IRCTC I'm told there is a joy ride service leaving Darjeeling at 16:20 however for the day I want to book (9th October) this train is not appearing on the website. Is this a glitch or do some days have less services than others?
Yazıldığı tarih: 15 Temmuz 2019
Last March we travelled by full route toy train(From new jalpaiguri to Darjeeling) and simultaneously have a journey by coal hauled Darjeeling- Ghoom- Darjeeling joy ride.
When you make online booking for joy ride please note use starting station code "dj" and destination station code must be used "djrz"
After all there is no need of prior reservation for joy ride...but it is advisable for full route ride(Train no:52541 njp-dj)
