We visited Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort in mid January during a major snowstorm and were knee deep in powder on piste! Conditions were challenging due to strong winds, white-out moments and it was super cold. We're not expert level skiers and boarders and had rental gear from the Mountain Centre which weren't ideal for such conditions, but boy, did we have fun!
It was only after we left and looked at Instagram posts that we realised we didn't see much of the resort at all. We missed the panoramic views of Otaru and the Sea of Japan and the beauty of the runs as visibility was so limited during the two days we were there. Sapporo Kokusai is a pretty resort and worth revisiting when the weather is calmer.
Upsides
- Good quality DEEP powder: bring your powder skis and boards along with a snorkel!
- Runs are limited as it is a small resort, but there is something for every ability level including access to the backcountry.
- The red intermediate runs are good fun for cruising on and are of a decent length.
- The lift infrastructure is decent and can handle the crowds efficiently.
- There are many food options available at the main mountain centre, plus a lovely cafe at the top of the mountain that plays awesome tunes and has the largest marshmallows ever in their hot chocolate!
- There is ample car parking for a small resort.
Downsides
- It is CROWDED especially on the weekends when local residents visit for the day and add to the already huge number of tourists that come in by the bus loads.
- The rental centre isn't the most organised at managing the large crowds and staff are generally harried as a result. Be prepared to queue even if you have made advanced online reservations for gear.
- Limited English is spoken by staff so have Google Translate handy.
I'd go back again when the weather conditions are less challenging to savour the panoramic views of the resort, and cruise down the runs without being hindered by poor visibility. Sapporo Kokusai is awesome for its small size and I'd be a very happy chappy if this was my local hill.
Pro-tips
- Plan to visit on a weekday and avoid the weekends / local holidays as the crowds really swell.
- Get there before the day trip buses from Saporro arrive at 10am and unleash bus loads of day trippers on the resort, all of whom are heading to the rental shop.
- Reserve your rental gear online to reduce your waiting time in the queue.
- The QR code machine that prints the ticket for your rental gear is tiny and has no sign posting. It is placed on the counter for the queue to process walk-in reservations and may get hidden by the crowds waiting around the counter.
- Once you get your ticket printed, move to the queue for gear collection. Collect your boots first then move on to the next counter for your skis / boards.
- If you're renting for more than a day, return only your skis /boards to the specified counter for tagging and overnight storage. Take your boots with you.

Hi
Me and my wife will be visiting Sapporo from 20th to 27th Nov.
We wanted to visit a ski resort but the main objective is to feel the snow, play on the snow and maybe doing some outdoor children kind of activities…
Which ski resort would you recommend?

Hi! Some questions for our intended visit next week. My family and I are keen on snow play and sledging, and our primary target for this is Takino Snow World. However, I'm a little worried that the Takino's snow tube course might be closed down earlier than end-March because of melting snow. Kokusai seems like a good alternative, so:
1. If we go sledging/trial skiing/playing in the snow at the base, do we need to buy lift tickets or pay any other fees apart from renting skis or sledges?
2. What else is there to do at the top if we buy gondola tickets? Can we do some snow play there?
3. Will the base area still have a lot of snow third week of March?
Thanks!

Hello Harriet s,
There is a bus pickup at Keio hotel at one specific time by Hokkaidoi Resort Liner. The bus needs to be booked 9 days in advance. It's much better to walk to Sapporo Jr station at the bus terminal and pick up the hourly bus there. Less stress if you are late.
Yes your child can ski alone. Has he/she skiied before? If not, I would recommend ski lessons, book early because there are limited English instructors. If your child skis alone, the runs are very long like over 2 km, maybe 3. If he/she takes the wrong lift or makes the wrong turn, he may end up at a difficult black diamond run. So it depends on the level of maturity. There are no ski patrols to help him/her.
There is snow til May 6.
You can stay at the ski lodge cafeteria to wait for your child, no fees or entrance costs for you.
Lift tickets are 3600yen for adults and 1000yen for elementary school children march 26 onwards.
Ski rental are extra. Locker fee extra.
The bus is 2500yen return for adults and 1260yen for children.

Hey thanks for the useful review! I've been trying to find this Price Hotel that you mentioned, but it doesn't appear anywhere. Any details you can share about this hotel? Also, I'm trying to figure out when Kukosai will be open for the 2018/2019 ski season as I planned to go in early Dec....anyone knows how to contact them? Thanks!

Kokusai does not have accomodation. In winter season, many hotels run shuttles to this ski field. It's less than an hour from otaru
