The HKU Museum and Art Gallery is located along Bonham Road near the Hing Hon Road intersection. Opening hours are normally 9.30am to 6pm (Mon - Sat) and 1pm to 6pm (Sun) but can change when pandemic restrictions are in effect so worth checking their website to ensure they are open prior to setting out to the museum. Exhibitions are free for the public to visit.
There is a small permanent exhibition of historic pieces of antiquities and antique furniture including nice ceramics, pottery, bronzes, wood carvings and items that represent various periods of Chinese dynasties. The works are nice to see yet also similar to what you may have encountered at the Museum of History or Heritage Museum if planning to visit either of those larger and more comprehensive venues.
They hold various temporary exhibitions as well with local and international artist representation. Perhaps the most famous being the Botticelli 'Venus' exhibition that was held here nearly a decade ago. Recently we visited to see the Adrift of Time photograph exhibition by local photographer Chun Wai as well as the interesting Noda Tetsuya's Diary of Contemporary Prints. The Noda exhibition was nicely curated, presenting an intriguing view into the world of the Japanese print artist.
You can visit the HKU Museum website to see what exhibitions are presently being held as well as those that are scheduled for the near future. In the end, not likely a priority over our more important and larger museums but something to consider if you've done the rounds are are seeking out the lesser known and visited museums around the city.

写真展と伊勢神宮展だった。海外で日本展見てもしょうがないので早々に退散。博物館は大したことなかった。デモ中の香港大学の様子見に行ったので、そのついで。学食がどこも非常に混んでた。

...now extended until 27/10/19 is an absolute MUST SEE for anyone who is interested in photography, French society or twentieth century culture. It’s an absolutely stunning look at different aspects of and places in France, and a few other places, between the 30s to the 90s. Some of the images are just incredible: as many poignant as there are others beautiful. As far as the museum itself goes: it’s a good space in which to view things and it’s free...all good I reckon. But anyway, go to see this show in particular before it closes.

Disappointing gallery not even matching the website blurb. A few small carvings and a handful of other objects is about all it is.

It's free. Their exhibitions change from time to time so I can only write about what I saw. But overall the things they displayed are curated with taste, which accommodates the preference of the public. It's right next to the University of Hong Kong if you are interested in local students' life or a toilet break / water refill. XD

SItuated on the edge of the University of Hong Kong campus, this museum is very much in the old style, showing off artefacts that have been held for decades. Although there is a current display of modern painting/photographs of the mountains, landscapes and gorges of China, the core of the collection is in the wonderful ceramics. I don't know what budget the Curator has access to in order to stage visiting exhibitions and loans, but there is a big opportunity here to use more of the space to attract a different demographic of Visitor. THe flavour at present is of an academic collection, little attempt is made to describe WHERE the exhibits were acquired, only what era they hail from. THe display of Nestorian bronze crosses could be made even more exciting by mounting them on mannequins to show how it is thought that they were worn. THe museum needs to think about what it is trying to achieve for the visitor experience. I enjoyed my visit, it is unlikely that casual tourists will find much to keep them there for more than half an hour. IT's free.

I visited this museum with a friend who had heard they had a special exhibit of porcelains. The exhibit was excellent, with very good explanations of the various items, some of which were very old and delicate.
In addition we wandered through the permanent collection, also fascinating.
My friend was so taken with the place that she is thinking of becoming a regular supporter.
