To the administrators of TripAdvisor: If you need to fact-check this review, please contact me, and I can provide photographic evidence.
I’m not sure where to begin with Tearan Adventures, as they have yet to respond to my attempts to discuss everything that went wrong on our recent trip to the Maasai Mara last week. I hope they read this and respond, or maybe they're just hoping potential customers will overlook this one negative review in favor of the 18 other positive ones. That's your choice. They might even try to have this post removed, but at least I can try to warn others. If I can save even one life, it’s worth it.
If you want a quick summary: our itinerary was changed without our knowledge, we experienced four different car breakdowns in the middle of nowhere, we were asked for more money while isolated and vulnerable, and our lives were put in danger both in the game reserve and on the road. Read on for details, and you can decide for yourself if you want to book with Tearan Adventures.
Like many of you, I relied on positive reviews and trusted this company to be legitimate. However, I discovered they put my family’s life at risk on multiple occasions in very vulnerable situations. I know the 18 reviews here are glowing, but it only takes one oversight or a tragedy for those positive reviews to mean nothing. I want to share what happened to us on August 14-15, 2024, during our Maasai Mara trip to warn others that booking with Tearan is a risk you may want to reconsider. The “professionalism” of Jackline, the Main Reservation Manager, vanished as soon as things started to go wrong. I have to admit, their slick website, invoices, and detailed itinerary initially fooled me. I’ve reached out to Jackline and their director, Lewis, but despite seeing my messages on WhatsApp, they’ve gone silent.
Here’s what happened on our one-night, two-day trip. We are a family of four with two young children.
Everything was fine until the trip actually started. According to the itinerary, we were supposed to be picked up in Nairobi by a safari car (a Land Cruiser Jeep). Instead, we were picked up by Lewis, one of the directors, in his small Nissan Versa. As we got in, he explained that the only car Tearan owns was on its way out of the game park and would meet us halfway. So, all four of us plus Lewis squeezed into his five-seater car, and we started our drive towards the park. However, we had to stop several times to let the engine cool down because his car kept overheating. By the time we reached Narok, a major town, to meet the Jeep, we were told the car was undergoing maintenance. I knew it was the only car the company owned because Lewis had mentioned it earlier. The car was also labeled as Tearan Adventures.
After waiting an hour at a gas station, we were ushered into a dirty, old Land Cruiser with a KAG license plate, meaning it had been in service since the 90s. As we got in, they were finishing up fixing the brakes and clutch. Although concerned, I overlooked it. We were then driven to a different hotel outside the park, not the one we had originally reserved inside the park. This meant we missed out on both the night and morning game drives promised in the itinerary, as Tearan was only willing to pay for one entrance fee. They tried to spin it as an upgrade for the hotel, claiming the original was fully booked—despite me reserving it a year ago. Tearan apparently didn’t have the funds to pay for the reservation, so the hotel canceled it. In reality, they barely managed to secure a last-minute booking elsewhere.
We were dropped off at a newer hotel, but our driver, Vincent, didn’t know how to get there and had to ask for directions along the way. The next morning, we were ready by 4:30 AM for the early game drive, but Vincent didn’t show up until 6 AM, claiming there were problems with the car. We finally got into the Jeep while it was still dark, but the headlights weren’t working, forcing Vincent to drive blindly. We could have hit a tree or veered off the path at any moment.
Ten minutes into the park, the car stalled and wouldn’t move. We had to wait two hours for another driver to arrive and pick us up. When he finally arrived, 30 minutes later, he struggled to drive the manual transmission, causing the car to stall again. The battery was too weak to restart the car, so we were stuck for another hour. Eventually, another tourist vehicle tried to help us jump-start the car, but the driver didn’t know how to do it. Frustrated, I took over and jump-started the car myself. By the time we got going, the sun was up, the animals were hidden, and the drive was pointless. After several more breakdowns, we decided to head back to the hotel at noon.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the end. Tearan’s old car was supposedly fixed, and they came to pick us up for the drive back to Nairobi. After multiple calls from the hotel to Vincent, he finally arrived five hours late. According to the itinerary, we were supposed to be back in Nairobi by noon, but by 5 PM, we were still on the road. An hour into the drive, the car’s gears started slipping, making it impossible to maintain speed. We were on a dark road with no lights, surrounded by speeding cars, and it felt like we were going to be hit at any moment. We finally crawled into Narok, where I discovered the Jeep’s axle was hanging off—meaning the wheels could have fallen off at any moment. How dangerous is that?
At the gas station, I demanded they call a taxi to take us home. It was 7 PM by this time. Vincent called Lewis, who told him to ask me to pay for the taxi ride. After everything we had been through—the botched reservation, the dangerous drives, the failed safari that I ended up driving myself—Tearan still wanted me to pay for the ride back to Nairobi. I know this because I speak Swahili, and I understood everything they said during the two days they assumed I didn’t. Even at the beginning of the trip, when Lewis pretended he didn’t know about the changed accommodations, I overheard Jackline feeding him excuses over the phone.
Finally, after I refused to pay, they arranged for a van to drive us home. We had to wait another two hours, and we didn’t arrive in Nairobi until midnight. My family was exhausted, and I was too drained to say anything. I respectfully reached out to Jackline the next day to discuss the numerous dangerous practices we experienced, but I haven’t received any response or apology.
One last thing: all the pictures on Tearan's TripAdvisor page are of other jeeps and vehicles from other travel companies. I strongly recommend steering clear of Jackline, Lewis, and Tearan Adventures. If this happened to us on a one-night reservation, I’d be very nervous about booking anything longer. I was relatively calm because I know Kenya and how to navigate the country, but I can’t imagine how stressful this would have been for a foreigner.
Despite everything, the Maasai Mara is beautiful, and not all companies will put your life at risk like this or demand more money while leaving you in dangerous situations. Best of luck as you decide whether to take the risk with Tearan or run far from them.

This trip has been the most amazing experiences of our lives which cannot be replaced with any other trips. We got to see the BIG 5 and the migration in the beautiful landscapes of Amboseli and Masai Mara. Not just this but our stays at Sopa lodges were so close to nature and we could experience the rawness and the stunning beauty of Kenya. Still can’t get over the most gorgeous place of this trip at the Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Overall, this was the most memorable experience and I would like to thank Tearan Adventures and Jackline for planning the entire itinerary for my family. Everything went smoothly and I would definitely recommend to reach out to Tearan Adventurers if you’re planning for a Kenya trip.

When I got back home, I just can't wait to write down this review. Our 8-days journey is wonderful and memorable because of Jackline and our reliable guide/driver Rufus. Actually, I changed my agency during booking process to Tearan. Jackline helped me a great deal on booking lodge/camps. When we arrived, She greeted us at the airport and also texted me everyday to make sure our trip is okay. Kenya sounds far away to us (we are from China), but Jackline truly made it home.

My wife and I celebrated our honeymoon trip with a wonderful two days at Sopa Lodge. Jackline helped us organise the trip and provided excellent levels of service and communication. We also loved the nice touch of a bottle of red wine in our room on arrival - very kind and thoughtful!
