Small, but beautifully curated, gallery of pan African heritage art. I particularly liked the textiles gallery. Expect to spend around an hour here. They ask for passport or id number but I just wrote down something of approximate length and no-one batted an eyelid.

Given the small number of reviews on Trip Advisor, and not a single recent review, this gem is obviously not on the radar screen for the majority of visitors to Nairobi. But it should be. It features the story of Joe Murumbi, prominent Kenyan leader and early promoter of African art, and his wife, Sheila. Part of their vast collection is on display here - art, jewelry, fabrics, books, postage stamps and other artifacts. The written placards are helpful, and we also enjoyed hearing about both Joe Murumbi and the museum building itself from a friendly and knowledgeable guide prior to embarking on our self-guided tour. There are also original pieces by various African artists for sale. We purchased a painting, and the staff took great care in packaging it for us to take home. Highly recommend a visit! We spent about 2 hours there. Important - check out the ticketing process ahead of time. Kenya has recently implemented a new cashless system for visiting the various national museums, and there are some kinks that need to be worked out. Make sure you bring your passport!

I visited as I was staying within walking distance. Although only a small gallery I spent a couple of hours studying the exhibits. The Murumbi Collection is fascinating and the gallery exceeded my expectations.

This museum houses some of best African artworks anywhere. Antiques collected and donated by the late collector Joseph Murumbi, make the visit to the gallery a worthwhile experience. The collections some of the finest African jewelry and antiques Africa can offer. Everything about the gallery is quite captivating for art lovers.

It is run by the National Museums of Kenya and therefore it is free for members of the Museum Society of Kenya but there is a cost for other visitors. It currently hosts the Murumbi Gallery and there is so much to see. The artifacts are from all over Africa therefore one learns a lot more than that stuff about Kenya. The most exciting artifact for me was a copy of the famous Kipande, the identification card carried around the neck by Kenyan native males during the colonial period. The Point Zero, which is the spot from which distances from Nairobi to the rest of the world are measured, is worth the visit too. The guides are amazing and they really know their stuff. For food, there is also a cafeteria by the parking where one can relax too.

How to get there
The gallery is located within the central business district and it is easily accessible by Uhuru highway and kenyatta avenue as it is located at the intersection of the two roads. It is very convenient especially if you have a night stay in a hotel within the city because you will not incur any cost for transport because it is a walking distance. You can choose to walk or use public transport.

Opening hours and charges
The gallery opens at 8.30am- 5.30pm daily . A Kenyan citizen only needs to have ksh 150 for entry while residents and non residents need ksh 600 and 1000 respectively. Night tours and guided tours are also available. The guided tours are given to a maximum of 10 pax at 1000/= for citizens and 2000/= for residents and non residents.

Why it stands out
This gallery stands out because there are few places that can boast of such a rich diverse collection of artworks from all over African, from pre-colonial works of contemporary artists. It show cases private collection of an art collector who was at one time the vice president of Kenya, Joseph Murumbi.

Where to eat
The coffee lovers are also not left out because there is a lovely café with a touch of the African theme where they can sit down and have some coffee after the wonderful experience inside the gallery.

What to do and see
The main activity at the gallery is looking at the beautiful art collections of the African culture that leaves you inspired and impressed. Every piece of art in this gallery is eye catching and amazing. At this gallery you realize how Africans were very creative: their traditional fashion, the wood carvings, furniture and utensils all leaves you surprised how they managed to make such beautiful pieces of art. One can also come to this gallery to specifically shop for the African artifacts that are sold at relatively fair prices.
The gallery also houses the home of murumbi, the private art collector. This home had various art collections owing to the fact that the owner was an art collector, this home had an African theme which shows how murumbi loved Africa and so the need for preserving the culture for future generations.
It was fun for me and very exciting to look at the amazing art collection from all over Africa. I kept wondering how people were that creative to design such art. I realized that this gallery was very important in conserving this traditional art that today is very rare to find. I had a guide to take me through the gallery though he was friendly and welcoming The environment was clean and well maintained, the lighting system was energy friendly and I hope the same will continue
The Nairobi gallery is a must go attraction and if you have never thought of it as a place to be you miss a lot .for your next visit to Nairobi this gallery should appear as your first in your list for places you intend to visit. It’s an amazing lifetime experience you should not miss. The gallery is suitable to any tourist: children, adults, disabled, youth and students. It is a guarantee that your expectations will be met.

This Museum holds the private collection of one of Kenya's Independence Leaders & former Foreign Minister Joseph Murumbi. He was the leading "Pan African" Art, Textile, and Book Collector on the Continent. He also co-founded the African Heritage Art Galleries and Festivals business, at one time the largest promoter and collector of African Art, Cultural Objects, and Textiles. The company closed after financial reversald due to 1998 Embassy bombings, and the effect on Tourism. But much of the Art is also on view at the African Heritage House (south of Nairobi), owned and run by his former partner and fellow collector Alan Donavan. It is open for tours by appointment.

The collection in this small/medium sized museum is OUTSTANDING....it covers art, textiles and stamps from throughout Africa. The item displays are basic, but the labelling and explanations are comprehensive, logical, and clear, and the whole exhibit does a GREAT job of connecting African Art and Cultural Objects into an understandable whole and "Big Picture"....better, in my opinion, than the much more grand and well financed Smithsonian Museaum of African Art in DC !! Being the Personal Collection of cultured and artistically sophisticated couple, the whole thing hangs together beautifully, even though it clearly works on a shoestring budget.

The story of how this collection came together, and was saved at the last minute from dispersal or export to the UK is fascinating in itself... it is something of a miracle that it exists at all, since Public Art Museums are hardly ever a priority in Developing Nations with many other priorities.

The Museum website is VERY basic, and almost kept me from visiting... I had a long chat with the Curator about how important it is to improve it, so visitors to Nairobi will understand and make the trip....so don't judge this museum at ALL by the website. The Curator asked me to write a note to the National Museum Administration with my views, as she sees the problem, but can't get any attention.

The good news for YOU it, NO LINES... and a GREAT 2-3 hours (MORE if you really KNOW African Art and Artifacts) can be spent here. And because the Museum is smack dab in the CENTER of Nairobi.....it was the "Zero Point" from which all distance was measured during Colonial Days, as this was where Birth, Death, and Marriage Records were all kept...and apparently also once the main Post Office.

SO ..... go see this museum when in Nairobi...it is easy, satisfying, and a GREAT learning experience. And tell your friends.... it is a HIDDEN GEM...and you are now IN THE KNOW ! :) :) :)
