This is a small modern monastery. Its main temple (and, apparently, the only one) is the Church of the Transfiguration. It is visible from almost any point in the central part of Tbilisi, including from Avlabari and Mtatsminda. In general, I got the impression that Tabori is the highest natural point in Tbilisi. From the site near the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, the Narikala fortress is visible from above.
The monastery was founded in 2002 and at the same time the Transfiguration Church was built, therefore both the monastery and the church are entirely new buildings. However, there was a castle or fortress on this site in the 18th century.
The mountain or ridge was formerly called Taboris-Mta, which translated means Tabor Mountain. Mount Tabor in Galilee, located 6 kilometers southeast of Nazareth, is considered or recognized as the mountain where the Transfiguration of Christ took place. Hence the name of the church.
It is unknown when the fortress was built on the mountain, which covered Tbilisi from the south. There is information that the fortress already existed in 1046, when King Bagrat IV (1018-1072, reign from 1027) took Tbilisi, which was the capital of the Muslim Tbilisi Emirate, and placed his garrison in the fortress. The fortress was destroyed in the first quarter of the 17th century during the campaigns of Shah Abbas I in 1614-1617. In the 1630s the fortress was restored. In the first half of the 18th century, the fortress was alternately occupied several times by the Turks and the Persians.
In 1735, Tbilisi was taken by the Persian troops of Nadir (since 1736, Shahinshah of Persia, Nadir Shah). Before this, Kartli and Tbilisi were part of the Ottoman Empire. By his order, the Tabor fortress was destroyed and, probably, was never restored after that.
In 1748, the king of Kakheti Irakli II (from 1762 became the king of Kartli-Kakheti) liberated Tbilisi from Persian troops. At this moment the Tabor fortress was in ruins. By 1795, when the Battle of Krtsanis took place on the slopes of the Tabor ridge, it was already abandoned. After the battle, the Persians destroyed to the ground what was left of this fortress.
Let's return to the Tabori Monastery. Although it is visible from almost anywhere in central Tbilisi, finding your way to it is not so easy. Even before visiting, I came across reviews on the Internet that taxi drivers did not know the way there. There is a highway, ships according to the map, and in reality I saw it near the church, but it does not pass from the Kura River, but from the opposite direction, that is, you need to go around the mountain. But from the Kura side, that is, from the center of Tbilisi, there is no road to the monastery in the sense of an object or structure at all. And the climb to the monastery will probably be reflected in the memory more strongly than the goal of the climb itself after it is achieved.
At the beginning of the journey, everything looks civilized. You need to go up from Heydar Aliyev Square along Joseph Grishashvili Street (1889-1965, this is a Georgian, and then Soviet, Stalin-era poet, and he wrote poetry accordingly) to the place where Herzl Baazov Street adjoins it (1904-1938, this is a Jewish-Georgian poet, prose writer, translator, was a participant in the Zionist movement; by the way, during the Soviet period he received a legal education and worked as a judge in Tbilisi, was repressed and died). The climb up the street is quite steep. Then we turn right and go up Herzl Baazov Street to its end, we find ourselves at a dead end, where between dilapidated buildings there is an equally dilapidated staircase. You have to climb it. After climbing the stairs you find yourself in some kind of abandoned courtyard with a fallen fence. So you need to climb over the fence (or, as it were, climb onto it) and find yourself on the path leading further up the mountain. And then you need to follow the path. It is indirect and meanders among small bushes, sometimes diverging. Along the way we came across faded cacti, even though it was September. Until now, I had never seen cacti in the wild. If everything works out, the path leads straight to the monastery toilet (yes, the place is so-so, but that’s the way). Then you need to climb the stairs and you find yourself on the platform in front of the church.
I'll share one more observation. Despite such a hidden and even secret path to the Tabori monastery, tourists walk along it quite actively. We met about 5-6 tourists, and, as usual, they were all Russian or Russian-speaking.
The Transfiguration Church, as I already said, is modern. It's nothing special. However, its shape and location on the mountain resembles the Jvari Monastery in Mtskheta. There is usually no one inside the church. Self-service. On the table there are candles of different lengths and thicknesses with prices indicated. You take the candle you need, put the money for it next to it and that’s it. Nobody controls.
Near the church there is a good observation deck with beautiful views of Tbilisi. This platform is located higher than the platforms in the Narikala fortress. Actually Narikala itself is located below and from the Tobori monastery there is a view of Nirikala from above.

A faster route than shows on googlemaps is to walk on loseb Grishashvili street past the sulphur baths and turn right onto Firdousi Street which becomes Gertsel Bazovi Street. At the end of Gertsel, you will feel as though you are entering someone’s yard, but just follow the path and the steps leading up. On the way, you’ll notice a couple of small blue signs attached high on the wall directing you to the monastery.

We could see this beautiful church from pretty much anywhere in the city. It definitely was even more visible at night, all lit up and overlooking this beautiful city!

Всем доброго времени суток. Новодел он и есть новодел, но место постройки очень выгодное. Виды на Тбилиси просто бомбовские. Ради этого и можно посетить это место. Всем отличного отдыха и приятных воспоминаний

If you take the cable car to Narakila fortress, then you can walk on the top of the hill to the Monastery of the transformation. It is a very old building, not so impressive, but has historical roots.

Situated on a hill opposite Nariqala Fortress, Tabor Monastery firmly belongs to the skyline of Tbilisi. If you have enough time, you can walk up there and enjoy the view of the capital from the top of the hill.
