For such a priceless bit of historical heritage (oldest temple in the world, perhaps the oldest settlement, etc), the Göbeklitepe archeological disappoints in many ways. The excavated ruins are quite small and we were hoping to have more information presented on the various stele, the symbolism of some of the engravings, conjectures on the arrangement of the stones and an overview of the people and society who lived and flourished at the time (about 10,000 years ago). All of this would have kept us engaged with the site and made for an enriching experience.
Instead, we were treated to a perfunctory CGI 'animation' at the visitor centre (~10 minutes), a very tiny exhibit of generic neolithic general knowledge (again at the visitor centre).
The site itself is at a short distance (~700m) from the entry point/visitor centre and it is eminently possible to walk. However the apathetic staff and security were not bothered with explaining this and we ended up waiting 15 minutes for a small shuttle bus (the journey takes about a minute).
At the site there was a perfunctory description of each of the six temples (or chambers) open for viewing. It was frustrating at not having any more reference material or a guide to what to look out for, and after circumambulating the site twice there's no way to appreciate the otherwise fascinating excavation. Neither was there any self-guide book (such as the one given out in Pompeii) despite a steep entry ticket.
More attention seemed to have been paid in building a large gift-shop shop and stuffing it with the usual kitsch surprisingly including overpriced souvenirs from other archeological sites of Turkey such as Ephesus, Troy and Hattusa. Even entering the main office we were greeted by the gift-shop staff who tried to funnel us into the merchandise section. The ticket (at the time of our visit was TL 480 (~$16), expensive by the standards of Turkey (in comparison Hattusa, a gigantic site costs TL 120 (~$4) while the fabled site of Troy at Canakkale costs TL 330 (~$12).
In summary, a fascinating glimpse into the past besmirched by an administration focused solely on making money and not meaningfully promoting history.
