We visited here as part of the combined ticket with Thiepval. Two very different museums.
Whilst we enjoyed the museum we felt it was more like an art gallery in feel. It was very clinical and lacked atmosphere (unlike Thiepval which was superb in atmosphere)
The museum requires a lot of reading (assuming you've no mobile to download QRcodes).
We also felt the staff weren't particularly approachable or friendly.. Again Thiepval was superb in this area. Staff gave us no additional info at the ticket desk. There is a cafe but it was closed and seemed to be permanently closed, despite being a very large new looking area. So overall it was informative but lacked atmosphere

I took my 12 year old son to visit this museum on our way back from spending a few days in Normandy looking at the D-day landing sites and museums and I have to say I found this museum rather disappointing. It was very clean and clinical with huge quantities of written information around the many artifacts but did not convey any of the reality of the Western Front. The best bit was the introductory film which at least gave a good introductory background to the events leading up to the start of the conflict and gave an idea of what the Western Front would have been like.

This was another interesting and well maintained museum. Built within the fort, the actual museum is very modern. The exhibits are very well maintained and the signage and information was excellent. High recommended.

This is an odd museum. Entering through what one would assume is am medieval castle fortifications one gets a feeling of the depth of history which exists in the area.
The museum is modern. By modern I mean well lit, clean, quiet, almost clinical.
Dont get me wrong - this approach alows one to step back and contemplate, possibly put the events in context, reflect and contemplate . The problem is I cannot think of a conflict which was less clean, quiet and clinical.
There is not the faintest attempt to convey the abhorrance of the trenches, the cold and wet of a winter in a dugout or the sheer terror of an artillery barrage. Maybee thats been done elsewhere, maybee its concidered old fashioned, but if you knew nothing about WW1 and this was the only museum you visited you would not feel the absolute revulsion for the filth dirt and horror of the Western front.
The propoganda posters are brilliantlyn presented - the Uniforms laid out on the floor is a great feature and there is a wealth of technical information - but the context (for me at least) is lacking.
Its certainly worth visiting - no education or learning is wasted - but i would only advise it in concert with museums which attempt to portray the Western Front in a more vivid, less clinical, fashion.

A great museum on WWI with a focus on the Battle of the Somme and the war overall. Get the combo ticket that allows for entry to this museum and the one in Thiepval. Two excellent museums. Bring hands free headphones for your cell phone and you can use the free wifi to then scan the QR codes in the museum which feature actors in period gear telling the stories of the war. The museum begins with a history of the chateau itself which dates back nearly over 1,000 years. It's an interesting story to hear. Once you pass through this portion of the exhibit you proceed back outside and up the steps or via the lift to the WWI portion of the museum, which is big in size and covers alot. The WWI portion begins with a film in either French, English, German or one other language (Dutch or Spanish?) and covers the war - it lasts about 15-20 minutes but is very informative. Then, proceed into the WWI portion of the museum. Excellent exhibit with loads of information in French, English and German. Take your time and enjoy. Free parking is located across the street from the building or next to it. Bathrooms and snack machines on site, or you can walk to a local eatery. Nice giftshop at the end of the tour as well. Staff were welcoming and helpful.

Little moving image material. No logical overview. Lots of details. Screens only work like this. Displays not in order.

The beautiful building did not prevent our disappointment, compared to other museums on the same theme. Apart from the engravings, it is life in the rear much more than the battles that are evoked.

What a shame to have visited this place of memory at the same time as many very noisy classes which spoiled my experience...

The Historial of the Great War of Péronne offers a comparison of the different military, political and civil aspects of the main belligerent countries that participated in the first world conflict. There is no bias in favor of one camp or the other: objectivity is essential, only the suffering of the populations and the destruction caused are the subject of criticism.
The places are open and can accommodate people with reduced mobility because it is easy to get around. The pieces exhibited, numerous and presented in a visible manner, are well related to the themes mentioned. We regret a little that they are not necessarily classified in the order in which they are indicated in the explanatory texts, which requires us to look for them quite often in an area that we have already looked at. The texts themselves are readable and written in German, English and French throughout the visit. Most of the digital terminals in the room provide nothing more than the written word, which is a shame.
Articulated panels present works by artists who often experienced the war at the forefront. They only mention their title and the name of the author. It would be interesting to have a minimum of details on them, their journey, what the work is linked to. In general, although it is not an art museum, there is no mention of the techniques or supports used; This is information that we would like to know, so that beyond the subject we can have information on the way in which these objects/works were created.
Otto Dix's prints are impressive, a raw and unrestrained testimony to what the conflict was like. They contrast so much with the “neutral” tone of the rest of the exhibition that a warning to sensitive audiences at the entrance to the room would perhaps not be out of place.
Overall, we appreciated the locations and the airy scenography, the choice of pieces as well as the objectivity of the subject. We spent three hours exploring the Historial. Is this presentation sufficient to put this entire period into context? Difficult to say, as the subjects are numerous and, ultimately, superficially in-depth, for people with more knowledge than what is taught in basic school education. For example, many terms are mentioned (the Boer War, the Mexican threat, etc.) without us knowing what they are about and how it fits with the rest of the period; the maritime war (in any part of the globe) is only touched on, as is the fate of the German colonies (not a word on German resistance in East Africa until the end of the war)... finally, which means that the conflict was underway all over the world (and not only through the arrival of combatants from the five continents). The subject is very vast, and the Historial is general. Hopefully this will arouse the interest of visitors to delve into this period which forged the 20th century with its horrors.

Hi
Friends and i are visiting this area in June and are potentially interested in visiting. Can anyone advise:
A. how long is a sensible amount of time that would need to be spent here?
B. Anything we should be aware about of visiting in June e.g. closures.
C. What the opening/closing days/times are?
many thanks!

I would plan on an afternoon or a morning...tough for me to answer because I am into military history and enjoy the varied exhibits ranging from vehicles to period music, uniforms, etc. If you find it that you don't need that much time there are some lovely cafes nearby and some nice walks you can take. Peronne is a beautiful town and the museum is right in town.
As for closures and operating hours I would Google the museum website and find the latest information there. We were there in early Sept so hours and closure days may have been different than they will be in June.
