Très beau musée alliant pièces modernes et riches collections de peinture et de sculpture, de livres enluminés dans de vastes salles spacieuses et éclairées pour mettre en valeur les objets exposées. Belle visite a faire en famille ou en solo

We visited the museum to see the temporary 'La Somme: Préhistoires' exhibition, which highlights the important role the Somme Valley played in the realisation of an incredibly long human past during the nineteenth century, due to thousands of Paleolithic handaxes having been found in river gravels alongside long-extinct animals. I found the exhibition rather disappointing until the very end, when a small gallery devoted to the spectacular discovery of a Palaeolithic chalk-carving workshop at Renancourt, near Amiens, about ten years ago, displayed incredible survivors: pieces of tiny, sculpted Vénus figurines, including one entire, among other artefacts. It was a privilege to spend time gazing at them in the round, though the experience was initially spoiled by a school group that was doing an activity seated on the floor all around the display cases in the darkened room. Not ideal! We returned later. In the meantime, we descended to the the cellar level to view the Gallo-Roman galleries. These were well worthwhile, as we'd never realised Amiens had been so important in Roman times. It'd possessed its own amphitheatre. The finds were very rich and many were unique, in our experience. Hopefully, the Vénus de Renancourt can be permanently displayed here. If you missed the exhibition, there is a good book available that accompanies it.

This museum knows how to highlight his pieces. Some rooms are really amazing. Even if you are not a fan of museums, you will appreciate this one.

Gallery well set up (although the "right" direction of the exhibition was not immediately clear) and carefully maintained. We were also lucky enough to be able to visit the archaeological section with a mummy and several other very interesting historical and artistic finds!
The museum was free for us, with lockers available - always free - to store bulky bags and backpacks.

The biggest surprise I had when I discovered this museum. This is recognized by UNESCO! A real wonder of unexpected treasures! Since my stay in Picardy for 53 years no one had told me about this museum!

The Picardy Museum is one of Amiens' main attractions, but in my opinion it suffers from a somewhat outdated museographic approach: it dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when any city of at least average size was expected to set up a generic museum with artifacts of all kinds and origins, so that residents who did not travel (at the time, of course, the vast majority) could approach a compendium of official culture.

The complex is indeed imposing, starting from the building itself, in pompous "classical" French forms, and develops into a remarkable number of sections, which intend to treat any artistic manifestation from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century without focusing any particular genre. Starting from the rooms on archaeology, with a good number of Egyptian and Greek finds - very modest instead the space dedicated to Roman antiquities, which surprises to a certain extent given the aversion with which the average French mentality looks at ancient Rome - , we continue with the Medieval Collections, including numerous works related to the famous city cathedral, and particularly rich are the sections dedicated to painting and sculpture of the modern age, with some forays into the twentieth century; long list of artists represented, from El Greco to Luca Giordano, from Fragonard to Picasso.

The price is not particularly low (9 euros) and the visit takes, in my opinion, at least two hours, otherwise it is impossible to get at least a sufficient idea of all the Collections. Unfortunately, one has the feeling that the vastness of the place and the wealth of works exhibited in cases like this end up being counterproductive (see, albeit on another scale, the not-so-distant Louvre or the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna), and that a reorganization with dismemberment into smaller museums would facilitate the visit.

The newly renovated museum is a marvel. The works found there are each more beautiful than the other. It is very easily accessible and is suitable for all ages. It's a real good time and an outing to consider if you're passing through the region.

Very pleasantly surprised by the Picardie Museum, which turns out to be the largest in Hauts de France and which, for once, convinces with its size which is quite large.
You will find a ground floor devoted to sculpture and their French history mainly, a basement on the Egyptian era and paintings on the first floor. The museum is large enough to present the different paintings with some well-known names - Manet, Picasso...
Sorry not to have been able to visit the garden...

The Picardy Museum in Amiens is housed in a stunning building whose construction took place in the fifties and sixties of the nineteenth century. The atmosphere which oozes out that building is unique. Its architecture constitutes a magnificent setting for the collections of works of art it harbours. The Museum building began being built under the architect Henry Parent's design. After resignation of Parent in 1855, Arthur Diet was appointed to complete the construction of the Museum. The main façade of the building is splendid. On each side of the entrance door there is a medallion depicting Hercules and Ceres to symbolise Strength and Abundance, respectively. The main window above the entrance is flanked on each side by the block letters “E” and “N” as calling up the Empress Eugénie and the Emperor Napoleon III, respectively. They are topped by medallions of Michelangelo and Raphael. The building is crowned by a beautiful dome, and at its foot, large statues by Lequesne represent architecture, painting, sculpture and natural history.
The building interior is grandiose as regards both the dimensions of the different galleries and the rich ornamentation of the walls and ceilings. As a curiosity, there are two rooms reserved for the use of the Society of Antiquaries of Picardy. These rooms look like an elegant library - which invites to research - and a meeting room. The latter, called session room, is topped with a ceiling on which a painting having as its central motif the Picardy escutcheon, by the painter Désiré Joseph François Letelier-Belladame, is outstanding. The library has a mezzanine which is reserved to librarians and can just be acceded through a concealed staircase.
Some of the ground-floor galleries are: the Column Gallery consisting of three areas, to wit two naves, the vaults which rest on four columns, and the central rotunda. The whole of that room is beautiful. Besides, the Campana Hall - with outstanding ceilings and capitals of striking Hellenistic style - is a wonderful segment of the Museum. The first floor galleries are also spectacular on account of its decoration and atmosphere. Among them, the Great Hall is fantastic. Once in it one feels enraptured. Only the ceiling of this painting gallery is decorated. It was an ingenious idea, something that together with the height and the space of that room makes it a perfect place for displaying artworks, specially sculptures. The medallions there depict the main artistic local achievements. On the other hand, in the Northern and Southern galleries (first floor inner galleries designed by Emile Riquier) the ornamentation is limited to the arches of the cornices so that the glass roofs let much light come through, and the walls are thus adequate for hanging paintings. The corners of the ceiling are precious. Their decoration consists in vegetal composition from which large palms emerge. The study and contemplation salons are also gorgeous. They are, by the way, the only ones which retained their fireplaces.
The artworks which can be admired in that Museum are excellent and varied. Down the basements there are the archaeological and Egyptian collections. They range from prehistory to Gallo-Roman Times. Among the items encompassed by the stated collections, the Goddesses-mothers breastfeeding children and the Triple Hécate are superb, as well as the mummy or the recently discovered Venus. Among the medieval collections, the Puys d'Amiens are priceless masterpieces. The fine art collections from the 16th to the 19th centuries include real jewels as regards both paintings and sculpture. Among the former, “The Miracle of St. Donat d'Arezozo” by José de Ribera, or the “Immaculate Conception” by Gianbattista Tiepolo, and among the latter, the “Venus” in the middle of the Great Hall can be outlined. Finally, there are also in the Museum some examples of modern and contemporary art, such as the painting “Painter and his Model” by Pablo Picasso, and the sculpture “Woman” by Joan Miró.
The Museum of the Picardy is therefore a great Museum, comparable to the Louvre in Paris as far as the building is concerned, housing stupendous masterpieces. The visit of that Museum shouldn't therefore be missed when in Amiens or in the region.
