Me and my husband have done this trip before, took our grandson with us this time which he found fascinating being able to walk around the abandoned streets (first time we did it you could only view from the beach). I think some of the low reviews are a little unfair as it does say Mr John lived through the invasion and you will hear his personal story. I agree some of his commentary is difficult to understand, but this doesn't take anything away from the trip itself. Mr Ahmed is also very informative about the history before the invasion. I read a review about passports being taken when you got on the bus and not given back till the end. This was not the case with us, we gave our passport at the checkpoint and they were given back as soon as we had driven through, so no worries there. Highly recommended trip something very different from usual holiday excursions.

This was a six hour trip from 7:30 to 14::30, being picked up from our hotel and dropped off at our hotel.
The whole trip completely captivated my husband and I with the wealth of knowledge that Mr John and Mr Ahmed both have about the Turkish invasion.
They both worked incredibly well together with some humour thrown in too! 😃
There was an hour and a half for lunch at Famagusta and a mooch round if you fancied.
The temperature was perfect for this trip at 27 degrees ☀️
Not sure there’ll be any other so knowledgeable guides than two people who have been raised in Famagusta.

I didn't like it because the person who was supposed to explain the tour didn't speak good English, we didn't understand anything and his conversation was one-sided, without a voice intonation with a very strong accent. It sounded like he was reading something incomprehensible. The only thing I understood was the phrase "I lost my house and my land" that he repeated at least twenty times .. it then seemed to me that with all those jokes that the two guides did, with a lot of drama pretending to hide when he spoke not to be seen by the police. You could tell they were doing it on purpose and for quite some time...

Visited Famagusta. Bad experience. Old, dirty bus from being afraid to touch the seats with your hands. Air conditioning practically non-existent. The trip has two guides reciting a script written on a desk. A guide speaks good English while Mr John speaks very quickly and scrawling the words and you understand half of what he says or maybe even less. The only thing you understand as he repeats it until exhaustion is that as a result of this war he lost his home and his job but doing the math on how much the tour costs per person (30 euros) and the full bus (55 seats) you think that the job would seem to have been well replaced. A completely biased version of events is clearly given, but if you have the opportunity to hear the Turkish version too, many doubts arise. Apart from these completely personal considerations I had the distinct impression that it is all a gag prepared at the table.

Mr John's tour was interesting and worthwhile, however Mr John speaks so fast and so much that his passion, stories and history gets lost. The majority of the guests on our trip all said the same... that they could not understand what was being said and we felt as if we had missed so much as he is very knowledgeable about the area.
Mr Ahmed, his offsider was brilliant and enlightened us as to the history of the region and was very entertaining (even with his posh English... inside joke.)
Visiting Varosha was sobering. Farmagusta Walled City is astounding. Being dropped off at our hotels on return was a nice surprise.
A note to other Australians travelling, we had to choose Mr Johns tour as the other buses had issues with Australian passports

Having been to Cyprus in the 80's (ten years after the Turkish invasion) and also a more recent holiday, when I found out that a trip to Varosha was a possibility it was a definite must to do (the only reason really we stayed over on the east side of the island!). It was fabulous from start to finish and the most interesting and emotional trip we have been on. Yes, Mr John can be hard to understand at times, but his wealth of knowledge and a little bit of concentration on our part, it was a fascinating listen. Mr Ahmed who joined us at the border was similarly interesting and the banter between the two was a joy. The walk around Famagusta was fantastic too and would have liked to see more of it (another time maybe) and lunch at Petek's was enjoyable (and the cake shop at the back a revelation!). Would definitely recommend this trip if you are interested in the history of Cyprus.

Wow, what a heartbreaking time for Mr john and all the other families involved in this evaluation, it was a fantastic day out, buy very sad to hear his story. Mr John took another man with us and I've forgotten his name (the old English teacher) he was absolutely brilliant and walked us around famagusta and told us his story to, I would definitely recommend this trip. I never even knew this had happened in cyprus.
Just shows we only get taught what our goverment want us to know.

Myself and my wife found this tour excellent value for money, very informative and with excellent personal insights into the harrowing events that affected both Mr Johns and Mr Ahmed's lives.
We were picked up outside our hotel at 7:25 so expect an early start to your day. We were taken to see over the 'no mans land' area protected by both the UN and Turkish army at where Mr Johns lived, worked and grew up. Then we drove over the border into Northern Cyprus at which point this is where Mr Ahmed joins the tour.
While in the Turkish part of Cyprus we were taken to see the ghost town and then on to the old town of Famagusta for a stop for lunch. (Great place to bag some great fake goods!).
All in all a great value for money tour.
I do however agree with some of the other comments that Mr Johns does talk very quickly so you do have to listen quite intently.
