We managed to get into the Buhrle mansion during one of its last one-day-per-month open houses. Reservations were absolutely necessary and each group that went through was packed. Artwork ranged from "old master" through Canaletto to impressionists.
In preview of the plan to show the collection worldwide until the new wing of the Kunst Museum in Zurich is finished being built, and where the Buhrle collection will hang in the future, we saw one of the Buhrle's most famous works by van Gogh, "Le Semeur," at the wonderful Japan Influences the Impressionists show at the current Kunst Museum building.
When the lecturers at the Buhrle spoke of their concern about moving the works to the new Kunst building, similar to what happened at the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia, we mentioned that we had seen both the original Barnes in Merion and the new Barnes in downtown Philadelphia. "How did that work?" they immediately wanted to know, so we told them our thoughts.
I give this collection 3 dots, not because there aren't some wonderful works in it, but more because one has to wonder if, for general taste, it was worth struggling to get out to the Buhrle on the one day each month that it might be open just to see a few art works that are readily available, in type and by artist, elsewhere. Really, it was not. The mansion was up a steep hill from the train station and quite a bit outside Zurich city. A very rainy day added to our difficulty.
Personally, I think it's a good thing when private collections, such as is the case of the Barnes, move their works to more accessible sites. In Los Angeles, where we live, new museums to display private collections in very public venues have opened up, are opening up, and will open up over the next few years (the Getty, the Hammer, the Broad, the Guess jeans guys). And even if some private mansions, such as the Weissman Collection, still exist here, it is really all the better in my book to make interesting art as accessible as possible to a wide range of people, not just those who know to email the Buhrle two months ahead of time, as we did, in order to get a spot.

Been keen on visiting the collection in its original house for a long time. However, have missed several times the 1st Sunday of the month deadlines. Now, looking at the Collection's website, found out unfortunately that it is closed for good until the opening of a special wing at Kunsthaus, Zurich to accommodate the collection as of 2020.
