The Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, which became the patron saint of the city of Palermo after having freed it from a plague epidemic around 1620, is a place of great devotion for all the people of Palermo who, with affection, call it "Santuzza" and celebrate it with a great Feast, every year on 14 and 15 July. The Sanctuary built on Monte Pellegrino, in the mid-seventeenth century, incorporates the cave where the Saint died and where her remains were found; hundreds of ex votos hang on the walls as a testimony to the faith that the people of Palermo place in the Saint. Unfortunately, the square in front of the entrance is in a state of great neglect: it is not the best way to honor his memory. To reach the Sanctuary the only means and 'the bus or own means. in December with friends we decide to stop in palermo beautiful city we also decide to go to the sanctuary of Santa Rosalia but I must say that a little 'all abandoned not to mention the shop of the sanctuary that sold old stuff a museum always closed ( 5 times chs I find it closed staff a little' rude and listless .... such a sanctuary should be treated as a favor instead is all abandoned

A must-see if you climb to the top of Monte Pellegrino. Climbing those few steps and entering the sanctuary one realizes the great devotion that Palermons show towards the Santuzza. Absolutely worth visiting

A great way to spend a few hours while you are in Palermo. You can take an hourly bus up and down, or hike it. I hiked up and took the bus down as I wanted both experiences. The hike is 1 to 1.5 hours each way depending on your speed.
I found the hike wonderful, nice zone 2 cardio on pedestrian only paths with beautiful views of the Palermo area. If I was in Palermo for an extended stay, I would do it weekly and walk both ways.
As for the attraction itself, it is spiritual and will unique. Worth a one time view.

Sanctuary to visit absolutely if you visit Palermo. As soon as you get closer, you appreciate the art and feel a strong religious sense. It's hard to explain, better to live it!

The visit to the Sanctuary is really a must if you are in the area.
It is a place of prayer, but even those who do not believe remain fascinated.
Also, to climb the pilgrim mountain the view is beautiful, only this is already worth it.
Next to the Sanctuary there is access to the museum which, according to the Guide, opens only during the period of the treasure routes.
Honestly, it's not worth it.
On the way out, there are toilets for a fee and lots of stalls where you can buy souvenirs.
Recommendation to continue on the right for the closed road, from there you can admire a beautiful view. I leave you the picture.

Beautiful, the sanctuary is inside a cave and as you enter you feel the emotion of faith and devotion. Absolutely worth visiting! Keep in mind that throughout the month of September you can not go by car, you have to take a bus, which passes at different times near the roundabout of the entrance of the street that you do on foot. For a devotional speech you should do on foot, I'm about if I'm not mistaken, 7 kilometers, uphill. While for all the other months of the year you can get to the sanctuary with your own car. Once you arrive and along the way you can admire a beautiful panorama. I write this last but not because it is not important, Recommendation to bring an empty water bottle, to fill it with blessed water. Near the shrine there are stalls selling souvenirs and even very small bottles to fill the with water. I tried several times to call and write a message on the number on the sanctuary site, to ask for info but they never answered. I hope I've been helpful for those who want to go there!

What a beautiful place, one of the most beautiful churches I've seen. You can park right outside the door, on the street. From there, stairs lead to the building. I don't think it's barrier-free. Outside the door on the right and in the chapel, you can get information. Everywhere there's something in different languages. If you want to buy something else, you can buy souvenirs, food and drink on the doorstep. The toilets are free and ok.

We were lucky enough to be in Palermo on the day of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the remains of Santa Rosalia on 4/9/1624.
What to say! Reading the story of this Saint and how she eradicated the plague in the city of Palermo, left us moved and hopeful. The Saint appeared to a sick fisherman telling him where his remains were buried. They were found in procession in the city and the plague was eradicated. Sanctuary dug inside the cave where Santa Rosalia took refuge for most of her life. Absolutely worth visiting to pray for those dear to us!!

Second time we go, it is located on the Pilgrims Mountain, very suggestive place and so much tranquility, every time I go to Palermo I go back.

Buona sera, vorrei raggiungere il Santuario con mia madre. Vorrei sapere se una persona con qualche piccolo problema a una gamba può raggiungere questo Santuario percorrendo il sentiero a piedi. Grazie

Il percorso, sebbene impegnativo, non presenta tratti difficili da superare, quindi se il problema di sua madre è lieve, come lei dice, non vedo alcun problema.
