What a great trip to the siege tunnels. A hardhat is required but you will not be disappointed. It really is a great collection of history, notably on how the tunnels were made, and what they were used for. The Jocky Lookout was great and had awesome views of the airport. I'd strongly recommend that you spend at least 45 minutes visiting.

This is included in the price of entry to the nature reserve. I stopped here while walking down from the top of the Rock, and it was much more than expected.
It's a great way of getting a bit of an introduction to the last 300 years of history for Gibraltar, as the tunnels were intimately involved in that history. Plus, it's an adventure to explore the tunnels and use your imagination to conjure up what it would have been like to be in them at different times over the past 250 years. The displays help with that.
There are also some good views over the Mediterranean sea and some parts of Gibraltar and Spain.

Trip to do in the path that allows the visit to the fortress. Excellent in case of hot days given the cool temperature inside. Beautiful view that allows you to see the airport. To reach the top the climb is inaccessible.

The tunnels were fascinating. They were well lit, signage was clear and helmets were provided. The new exhibits were in the process of being set up so we unfortunately did not experience this but I’m sure they will be great.

One of the great examples of human creativity and engineering - if only it would not be so often for a debatable reason. Amazing how they could dig these tunnels clos to the face of The Rock already in the 18th century, and later in the 20th century on an industrial scale to house up to 30.000 soldiers in The Rock.

Monday 22nd of April and we visited Gibraltar which included a trip up to Top Rock and the Nature Reserve.
These Tunnels are certainly among one of the top attractions in the Reserve. It was a real real adventure as we walked through the tunnels with information panels along with mannequins in military uniforms, old cannons and so much more. Tableaus have been created to depict what life was like when the Tunnels were active and inhabited.
We did stop, a number of times, in total amazement and pondered the sheer human effort to excavate the Tunnels. They were carved and dug out of the solid limestone by the British during the Great Siege of Gibraltar of the late 18th century, the human cost must have been horrendous.
The Great Siege, which lasted from July 1779 to February 1783, a period of three years, seven months and twelve days.
Total construction length of the tunnels by the end of 1783 was approximately an astonishing nine hundred and nine feet (roughly two hundred and seventy-seven metres).
The were a number of stand out features like St George's Hall and the fifty-two step spiral staircase down to the Cornwallis Chamber.
There were holes strategically carved in the rock where cannons were placed in their defencive positions. Looking through some of them there great views including across Gibraltar's Airport.
At the far end of the Tunnel is the Holyland Tunnel where a Fire Commander's post was built in 1908/09. The ruins are still there today as well great views.
The entrance fee was included in the price of the Nature Reserve ticket, worth every penny

One of the many tunnels on the Rock. This is much nearer the summit than others and offers great views through the rock which had previously cannons in place. Great history and fascinating to read the history of how they were made and usage.

If you visit the fortress, this tunnel is truly a must visit. It is a very long tunnel dug in different historical periods for defensive purposes. There are several small windows that open onto the rocky side of the fortress and from which the English cannons fired. The various internal rooms, dug into the rock, are equipped with explanatory panels, cannons and mannequins showing the military view of the time.

Long and interesting history of these tunnels. Built roughly 1779 by the English and added to and transformed over time. There are many information boards explaining the history and showing cannons etc. If you're into war history- this is a fascinating place to visit! The tunnels are long and a good wind passage. There are some good views along teh walk.

Do you still have to wear masks as stated on the website?
Yazıldığı tarih: 8 Ağustos 2022
I was there in May and nobody in Gibraltar appeared to be wearing masks. I can't imagine that the situation has changed since then.

Is it very claustrophobic in there?
Yazıldığı tarih: 1 Temmuz 2019
It depends on your comfort level. Neither my husband or I get claustrophobic.
You could walk in and if you don't like it leave. The tunnels are very long.

My grandad is 82 years old and we are visiting Gibraltar for our holiday in July. He would love to see the tunnels but are there lots of steps and unsteady floor?. He’s quite able and walks independently with no walking stick but just concerned about the steps and cardio side of this trip. Thanks
Yazıldığı tarih: 7 Nisan 2019
I agree, the floor is flat although hewn out of rock do not totally smooth.
There is no time pressure so you can walk at your own pace. The tunnels are on a gradient slowly downwards
I think your grandad could see a fair amount easily and get a good feel for this amazing piece of military history

Does the tunnel tour allow you to also get to the viewing areas outside at the top? Also, does the tram up get you to the entrance to the tunnels? My interest is in the military aspect of Gibraltar, but I also would like to like to see the straits and Africa across the channel. Thanks for any input!

Hello
You should buy a ticket that allow you to several objectives (the apes, the tunnels, the rock, moorish castle...). But you should be also be prepared to walk a lot. The cable car will bring you to the top, and from there everything need to be reached by walking. Still a memorable experience, worth the effort!

Is it best to buy a ticket for the Siege tunnels in advance or once you arrived in Gibraltar? We are visiting for one day and wasn't sure how busy it is.
Also, is it best to use the cable car to get to the top of the rock?
Do you know if the cable car ticket includes entry to the Siege tunnels?
Thanks
Andrew

The best thing is to buy the all inclusive ticket for the cable car and that covers everything up the rock. I remember it being 22 GBP ish which is far cheaper than the individual tickets. You get to see the cavern which is great ....the moorish castle .....the great siege tunnels etc. When we went to the cable car there was no queue maybe different if you are coming on a cruise. Lots to see up the rock the apes.... the bridge .... great views. Cable car up....walk down . As Wallace said .....a Grand Day Out !

Please can someone tell me where I can buy the tickets and how much it would cost per adult?
Yazıldığı tarih: 10 Kasım 2017
We got our tickets at the gate of the moorish castle , £10 each , but there are other outlets all same price but may be handier , don't think there are any discounts for pre bookings ,best ask your hotel for the nearest , the taxis include the charge,

L'ingresso del Great Siege Tunnels è lo stesso del World War II Tunnels ?
Yazıldığı tarih: 22 Eylül 2017
no,sono ingressi separati...l ingresso per il great siege tunnels è compreso nel biglietto del parco, invece l ingresso per world war II tunnels è da pagare a parte... spero di aver sciolto i dubbi
