Very interesting and well worth a visit. Lots for children to participate in. Cafe excellent. The audio sets provide very detailed information

Wow what can I say, I loved milestones before and it's even better at Christmas! We came today to visit Santa, such an amazing experience. After 8 years of visiting Santa's, this has to be the best one we've been to, today was just magical and so personal. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience, have a lovely Christmas and we will be back in 2025 to visit you!

Decent living museum. Not massive and all indoors (unless we missed something?)
Shop and cafe too. Friendly staff, and some in some of the shops. Plenty for children to see and do.

Went to visit Santa again this year as we came last year and had the most magical experience (think real beard, gold buttons, very Miracle on 34th Street). This year was disappointing to say the least. Santa's 'study' was too much space too little in it, and whilst the elf and Santa were good, the magic energy wasn't there like last year. We won't be returning for the Santa experience here next year. The museum itself is fine, good for a fun run around and the arcade is fun as well.

Visited the museum for the first time for the Christmas Market, took my old children 22&18 and my father and step mother. Was abit hectic for them. Parking was a nightmare. My Dad struggled to walk we had to park so far away. There no real system when you go in. It’s pretty much a free for all. The stalls were hit and miss. The little seating area for getting a cup of tea had no prices and run really badly. Long queues. Wouldn’t rush back unless it improved. I would suggest
* A one way system making it easier to work your way around
* More signage, things like toilets
* Better stalls perhaps more christmas related stalls. There seemed to be a lot of small business selling their own
products.
* Better atmosphere, maybe some Xmas music throughout the market.
* Better parking arrangements.

The best bit for us was the singer, she was great, very festive, but you could only hear her in that part.

Visited with 5 adults for the Christmas market. We were a little disappointed as we felt that all the stalls were fairly repetitive and it was all very expensive. It was also so busy which took the fun out of it as people were pushing past you and barging into you with very little manners.

It’s a shame also as some of the museum exhibitions are closed too or hidden and it means you can’t see it all. I must say we did enjoy playing in the retro arcade- we had a lot of fun in here. Overall, we were disappointed by the Christmas market but enjoyed the museum and we would certainly visited again to see more of the exhibits.

We had a nice day. Would like to see more things moving rather than static locked down displays. A lot of glass display cabinets were very dusty and either unlit or the bulb was flashing faulty. I think the tickets are over priced by £5, for what is just a large hanger which can be done in 2-3 hours. £41 for 2 people, then £17 for 2 coffee and 2 pasties. I am not a fan of the tickets usable for 1 year, it smacks of an excuse to put the price up on something people dont really do unless you live locally.

Milestones, Hampshire's Museum of Living History, is the perfect wet-weather visitor attraction as everything is situated under cover in a huge, modern aircraft hangar next to the mainline railway, in a leisure park on the outskirts of Basingstoke.
There is a Cafeteria offering snacks and light meals so visitors of all ages can, if they wish, spend all day looking around at recreations of Hampshire's industrial, social and transport history stretching back over the past 250 years.
Admission tickets permit unlimited return visits over the course of a year. There is so much to see and to do at Milestones that anyone living in the surrounding area can easily come back to explore bits they missed the first time around.
As a transport history enthusiast I particularly enjoyed the lovingly-recreated version of Winchester Chesil railway station, a far-flung outpost of the Great Western Railway on the Didcot to Southampton line which closed in 1960 and whose site is now occupied by a utilitarian, multi-storey car park.
There happens to be a real, functioning Public House - the Baverstock Arms - on site which emulates the atmosphere of World War Two, with newspapers available to read from that period, and a delightful female volunteer who played a lovely range of patriotic songs on an upright piano, just like something out of "Dad's Army". It's just a shame that the drinks, including some excellent Real Ales on draught, are charged at 2024 prices, rather than those of 1944! The pub is open for business every day between 12:00 and 15:30 hours.
The stunning re-creation of the huge Waterloo Ironworks, which opened in 1815 in the rural Anna Valley near Andover, using ore, coal and limestone brought in by canal barges, was a real eye-opener. I had no idea until my visit to Milestones that iron was made in north Hampshire right up until 1937!

I believe this would be very good if a) you live near by, to take advantage of the ticket giving you access for a whole year, AND b) you come often enough to take advantage of the seasonal kids 'trails' on a rainy afternoon, PLUS you have a child who you would like to be able to let loose amongst it all without worrying too much about them getting completely lost - it's big enough for them to be independent but not too big.

Other plus, every member of staff was very friendly and happy to help where they could.

However, from my perspective coming with my family - one child age six, one age nine - it was not value for money.

- the museum is about as un- 'living' as you could make it. We expected tour guides dressed up at the very least, telling us interesting titbits about life as a butcher, baker, candle stick maker. All the artefacts are there, but none of the life. There's a few static boards with far too much writing to take in, and massive arch lever files of information scattered here and there (I read a few). There was one dressed up lady in the inter war/post war time sweetshop and one lady in a pocket money toy shop. However, I spent most of the car journey home explaining to the best of my knowledge the rationing system and the way children had carrots as 'sweets' etc; the sweet shop lady was very nice, but all she did was stamp the card and fill up the bag on the scales. The toy shop lady, similarly, seemed to be there to sell the pocket money toys, not tell you about them. The museum is weirdly devoid of life, except for the visitors peering in at displays.

- the trail amused the kids but had NOTHING to do with the museum. It actually had the opposite effect. The kids were so bent on doing the trail - finding werewolf prints for Halloween, etc - that they ignored what was on show almost entirely, despite our best efforts. One of the clues were on boards stuck to the train ticket office window so children couldn't see past, almost as if they didn't expect you to actually want to look in!

- after paying a fortune for the tickets, an extra £5 for the trail and sweet ration card; we then had to pay £2.50 to be able to try the penny slot machines and a further £10 for two terrible cappuccinos, a club and a small kit kat. I believe my friend paid even more to be able to use some other machines that required different sorts of change. It was galling.

The buildings and things inside are lovely. As is the carefully constructed valley with a moving miniature train. I can imagine that once upon a time, before the budget man got hold of it, this museum was brilliant. The buildings and interiors have had much thought put into them. From a different perspective, my friend, who lives nearby, and has two kids under 4, loves it as a good place for them to run about. But if you are actually hoping to be inspired with 'living' history - unless they get more trained staff on board to bring it to life, don't waste your money.
