The management at this place seems not to have had the memo that libraries are supposed to be places of quiet. There seems to be no constraint at all on third parties and staff with regard to noise and no efforts to get people to shut up.

As others have mentioned, this library has a vast collection of books and written material specifically about London. It's more of a reference library than a general library, so useful for anyone doing research on London. Not so much for the general public though.

This is a huge collection of printed and other material relating to London and the City of London in particular. It has special exhibitions from time to time, as well as running s range of training courses. The interior is modern, so it seems a little plain by contrast with the grandeur of the rest of the Guildhall site, but that’s not a problem when you can access so much wonderful data.

A rich library. Readers go here to have references about History of London. A collection of almost 200,000 books is there. News papers, periodicals are available. Photography is not permitted. They hold many events and exhibitions. Good we found time to visit this place.

We visited specifically to see one of their small exhibitions, about Roman London. On arriving, as we entered, we were told that it had closed. As it happened, it hadn't - it still has ten days to run.

We persisted, and saw the exhibition. In fact, it DID seem as if it was closing - some coloured photos - explanatory handouts tucked in a corner - and a couple of maps strewn on a table, rather than mounted, were all that were to be seen.

Am more than happy to do my own interpretation: but didn't like the feeling that I had wandered into something that was being dismantled at the end of show. Could do better.

A shame, because the library itself is pleasant and welcoming.

A great place to visit if you are interested in London's history. It is sited next to the City Business Library (great for lots of free business information and some inexpensive courses). I went along for a short training session and stayed the rest of the day in the library. This had not been my plan, but the information was so interesting. Lots of books in store (as well as on the shelves) which take only a short time to retrieve. Very helpful librarians. Nice, clean and uncluttered place to study or read.

A City of London tour guide alerted us to this small exhibition in the Guildhall Library which is running from 12 Oct - 8 Jan 2016.
It tells the story of how in 1915, army chaplain Philip 'Tubby' Clayton established the Everyman's Club at Talbot House in the small town of Poperinge, a few miles from the front line in Ypres. In the house rank was irrelevant, orders were prohibited and soldiers were encouraged to forget about the war for a while.
Although a small exhibition (you will not need more than 30 minutes to complete it) it displays pictures from Talbot House's collections, various poignant letters written to and from Tubby and the actual wooden hut in which he wrote his memoirs before fleeing the Germans.
Worth a visit if you're at the Guildhall to see it's many hidden treasures.

I have attended many of the regular evening events held at Guildhall Library since they were introduced around 18 months ago.

The topics are wide-ranging and varied, but almost always relevant to the libraries key collections, the History of London, Maritime, or Food.

Some of the events I have attended are:

Charles Dickens - an entertaining talk by the Great-Great-Great Granddaughter of Charles, Lucinda Hawksley.

The Windmill Girls - A potted history / experiences of working at the Windmill theatre by some of the Windmill Girls.

Jerry White's London in the 18th Century - a talk on the sights, smells, characters and a view of society by the renowned historian.

After the lecture/talks there is the chance to have a glass of wine and socialise with people with similar interests and perhaps purchase a signed book from the guest speaker.

The library also holds many exhibitions by the Guilds based around the City of London. The launch events for these are particularly good value with some great finger food to go with the wine!

The staff I have found to be most welcoming, helpful, and often knowledgeable on the subjects matter being discussed.

Recommended for an entertaining, informative evening.
