This is a beautiful spot in Fulham with lots of good playgrounds for kids of all ages. There are also lovely ponds to relax by and a decent cafe in the middle. Note that it's not particularly big.

Bishop's park is adjacent to the River Thames - running from Putney Bridge to the football stadium. The whole park was refurbished with Lottery funding in 2008, modernising the Victorian and Edwardian designs.

The most attractive part of the Park are the two lakes - the edges are colourful with a natural look from wild flowers. Young birds including tufted duck chicks, coot and moorhen chicks are very cute. The two lakes have a rustic bridge crossing them and are surrounded by a terracotta balustrade. Adjacent to the lakes is an artificial beach and splash fountain (fountain turned off presumably due to Covid).

There is a large children's play area and sports greens for bowls and tennis. Parallel to the River is the first part of the park to be planned - Bishop's meadow, a then marshy strip of land. This was landscaped in the 1880s into a park and has fine trees and good views across the Thames. On the bank opposite are numerous boat clubs and most days there will be some boating coming and going.

The Putney Bridge end, the park includes some of the grounds of a large house formerly on the site. There is a sculpture garden with some very Victorian pieces by J Wedgewood and a mother and child sculpture by Herman Cawthorn - which is perhaps more to modern tastes. There is also a rose garden and a memorial garden to those who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil war.

The tea house cafe is currently serving as a small take away kiosk with snacks and drinks. It may re-open to serve a wider range of food later in the summer. For more of a choice of food now, there is a cafe in adjacent Fulham Palace. There are toilets both by the park cafe and at Fulham palace.

The park is adjacent to All Saints Church and the small War memorial gardens. The grounds of the church yard are atmospheric. You can access Fulham Palace through a gate here in the Churchyard, or at Bishop's Avenue

The three star review relates to the care and maintenance of the park - there is nothing structurally wrong, all the Lottery money was put to good use. Its more consistent lack of day to day gardening. The rose garden had not been pruned this year and the plants were overgrown and had black spot. In many flower beds were nettles and brambles - including lots of nettles around the lakes. The war memorial garden looked very unloved and neglected - someone is mowing the grass but that is about it. There was also quite a bit of litter around. This lovely park is in need of more love and attention.

There are two parks near the River Thames in Fulham. Hurlingham Park, to the east of Putney Bridge is a more functional sporting park, with tennis, basketball and other facilities including being the home of the Hammersmith & Rugby RFC. Bishops Park is the more interesting, the more beautiful and the more varied and runs along the river itself with the River Walkway. Hurlingham is a little distance from the river, while Bishop's Park has a River Walk running all the way along to Fulham Football Club.

Before reaching the park, have a look at the extravaganza of Gothic revival architecture in the form of Sir W Powell's Almshouses founded in 1680 and rebuilt in 1869 and All Saint's Church with its 15th century tower and perhaps most famous for being used as the location in the film 'The Omen'.

Bishops Park itself was opened in 1893 on land given by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and has a variety of different gardens and habitats including the lake area which is undergoing refurbishment, a memorial to those who took part in the Spanish Civil War and sculptures by James Wedgwood and Joseph Hermon Cawthra who both had studios nearby.

You can see that it was a grey cloudy day and the River Thames was not at its best, especially as the tide was out. Opposite the park are a number of boathouses and I did spot a couple of rowers out braving the weather.

Great find next to Fulham Palace for extending a walk beyond it. Delightful pond with ducks. Dignified memorial to the locals who went to take up the cause in the Spanish Civil War. Farmers Market was in full swing

I haven’t been to this park since my childhood about 28 years ago, it’s changed for the better, straight of Putney Bridge and down the steps you walk straight into the old palace garden. The first part is a rose garden which was really beautiful and from there it leads into and open grassy area with trees on both sides and the river Thames on the left.

To the top end it’s a kids cove, however the paddling pool that was once the place to go to has now gone and been turned into a huge sand pit, just before the sand pit is a skate park and just after the sand pit is a nice lake with a featured bridge which looks like something from a Disney film however fits in nicely, also another grassy area to have a picnic.

This holds great features like the all saints church and the old palace stone walls.

I think you can still go into the palace area however we didn’t walk all the way around but I will go back.

I guess as a little boy you only remember about the paddling pool but the older you get the more you enjoy the rest:)

Hope you go and check it out too.
