Today we went Mary, Freddy (our friend from Chuquicamata) and myself to visit:

PUCARA DE LA SANA
In Chiu Chiu we visit the oldest church in Chile. This church dates from the mid 16th century. I recall as a child that an image of Virgin Mary went in procession and that the image had a mechanism that would allow her to move her arms and head. This amazed the indians and was a factor that led to their ultimate convertion
A short drive away is the Inca lagoon. Legend sayd that a loval maiden fell in love with Atahualpa who left her abandoned with her newborn. The legend states that mother and child threw themselves into the deep waters of the lake affected by the sadness and deception of the Inca.
We continued our way we passing the winding high cliffs leading to the
rio Salado. The views are daunting and mysterious as the desert mixes with the narrow deep gorge of the river. It is almost as deep as the Colorado river. The river itself is but a sliver of water surrounded by a very narrow green valley.
Continued the journey and arrived at Aiquina. Around noon people began gathering. The carnival of "La Morenada " was about to start. Suddenly the street was filled with mystical creatures and terrifying devils, all dancing to andean music featuring drums, trumpets and flutes.
We returned to Chiu Chiu where we enjoyed empanadas and beers.
Another winding dusty road led us to Pucara de La Sana. The Pucars is a fort built by the Atacams tribes to defend itself from Inca incursions.We climb the Pucara, a true labyrinth of massive stone houses on a hill surrounded by the Rio Loa. An interesting feature is a building on the highest point. The wall of said building feature small windows positioned in such a manner that the sunlight will pas through them exactly during winter solstice and summer equinox.
The Pucara has a small museum with an interesting collection. Just outside you will see an example of Yareta a plant that takes 3000 years to grow and is now protected.
At the end of the day we were invited to visit the museum of Calama that is in reorganization. They allowed us to open boxes that are not yet cataloged to photograph
There were old things from Chuquicamata and also an incredible amount of fossils from the time of the dinosaurs. With the director of the museum we will make a web page so that the children can know more about our history.
Later we were invited to the house of Nancy Zavala, who, together with her brother Luis, search for forgotten things in the dumps of ghost towns and abandoned villages. It is incredible what they find and how carefully they keep everything. Luis used to have a newspaper stand in what is now the ghost town of Chuquicamata. He transferred his newspaper stand to Calama. When he saw me he came over and gave me a bear hug, one old timer to another.

É um passeio que não dá para perder. Tem muita coisa legal e interessante para ver. A estação do trem fica bem próxima dos pontos turísticos.
