What a Beautiful historic Theatre. All staff were lovely,helpful and polite. The seating is wonderful. It felt like a private audience. An amazing Theatre. Shall definitely return and have already praised it to all I've met. Well Done New Theatre Royal

Visited this evening with my daughter and grandsons to see Beauty & the Beast. A huge disappointment. Not the traditional story, which is lovely. Unrelated costumes, songs and dances from other shows, not relative to Beauty and the Beast. The choreography was bad, Only 20 minutes into the show and my grandson said, “this is not like beauty and the beast at all”.
We visit The New Theatre Royal every year for the Christmas show, this was the worst ever.

This is a lovely old theatre we have visited before. On this occasion we were there to see Rick Wakeman who was as excellent as ever.
The spoiler for me was the exorbitant fees charged for "handling" the tickets.
I complained to Rick Wakeman's staff but were advised that it is the venue who used the company Gigantic for the ticket sales.
The fees amounted to 30% of the value of the tickets.
Ticketmaster charge around 17%, which is still excessive for what they actually do, but almost half of Gigantic's fees.
Gigantic advised me that the cost covered the tickets (download your own) and the mechanism to scan them at the venue.
No scan took place. A cursory glance and we were admitted, as was everyone else.
The concert was 5 star, but one deducted for the reason stated.

I went to see a show with my friend. Although the performance was good it was ruined throughout due to the customer service being appalling. The usher was constantly disruptive by patrolling up and down the isle, hovering many times immediately next to my companion, shining her torch in people's faces and being unnecessarily argumentative. On contacting the theatre, although an apology was given alongside the reassurance of training for the staff member, all form of reimbursement or compensation was denied.

Saw the brilliant Jerry Sadowitz - THANK YOU New Theatre Royal for putting this show on. This was our fist first visit to this lovely little theatre with friendly staff and decent priced bar. Super location, parking nearby (reasonable price), lots of places to eat. We will come again! The price are affordable and places like this are the life blood of this industry. Keep it up!

What a waste of money - Sing a Long Matilda was! Beautiful Theatre. Friendly helpful staff. Started at 2pm, but this random guy dressed as a School Master, then rambled for 20 mins. Kids had already been waiting for show to start, so they were all keen to get the show under way. However, if the interaction of audience was hissing, calling people names because they had a high pitched voice is not great in today's World. Blowing raspberries, was the last resort! Of course we wanted everyone to have fun, but COVID is still rife, and encouraging people to blow raspberries should not be encouraged. Basically spent £16 on a kids ticket to watch the film of Matilda with this bloke interrupting. As for the 'props' bag, see for yourself! Not the theatres fault, but maybe they should check their offerings more thoroughly. Several parents having same conversation outside during the break.

A beautiful theatre , so close to Portsmouth and Southseas train station. Weve been a few times recently and have more tickets booked for future shows. Last nights Houdinis greatest escape was pretty poor but in general the theatre has some very good shows. Roll on Julian Clary and Kenny Thomas. Friendly staff and very clean.

Been 3 times now to see Hans Zimmer music show Aladdin pantomime and Spirit of the Dance. All 3 shows were amazing. Sat at rhe back in the circle 2 times and upper circle bench seating once. We now have our favourite seats in the circle. GREAT view of the stage. Purchased drinks at the bar which can be consumed whilst watching the show . The queue wasn't too bad. On every occasion we managed to walk straight into the theatre no queuing. Overall we love this little theatre there are some areas still being renovated but this does not detract from the ambience. Thankyou to all the staff and Technicians for putting on such fantastic entertainment. See you next time.

We love visiting the NTR, it has a lovely atmosphere and most seats are close to the stage. We saw the Spirit of the Dance last night, and it was fantastic, the energy and enthusiasm from the cast was incredible. The show was 100 mph from the moment they started, with so many costume changes we lost count. Some other reviews have commented on it not being an authentic Irish dance show, I would accept that they may be right, but what I saw was pure fantastic entertainment, with a selection of different dance routines from Scottish and other national dances to the can can - I don't recall these being of Irish origin? but they were superb. The lack of a few live musicians perhaps drummers and fiddles let it down, but the recorded backing track worked OK. We also thought the finale' was a bit weak and hasty and did not allow the performers to fully appreciate the audience response which was very appreciative.
The only downer on the theatre is the lack of Men's toilets, perhaps there are some others around, but I only found one on the Dress circle floor and whilst it was spotlessly clean it was totally inadequate with just two urinals and only one cubicle which didn't have a lock on the door, which left long queues during the interval. My Wife said the Ladies was not much better but she did find additional ones in the new part of the building.
Overall a fabulous evening and we hope the Spirit of the Dance returns to this lovely theatre again, as we will be there.

We went as a large family group, everyone enjoyed the panto (especially the washing scene). The staff were great. One of the younger children was unsure, so the staff suggest an alternative place to watch which was fantastic for him, later he felt brave enough to rejoin us.

Which are the best seats to sit in stalls or dress circle - are the seats in the stalls tiered or on one level?

Where you sit depends on your preference of view.
If you like an overall view of the whole stage, the Dress Circle is best, especially for musicals, opera or dance.
If you like to up be close and and personal, as we are a very intimate Victorian theatre, it may be better to sit in the Stalls.
The Stalls are raked (on a slope) and it is better to sit someonere from Row G backwards.
Row A can be at head-height when you are sitting down, so for the rake to be effective for you to have a good view of the stage it may be best to be a bit further back.
Rows A & B are absolutely fine if it is is stand-up comedy or a music show, but if you want to enjoy the whole performance it may be better to sit a little further back.

Rather late to respond we know, but unfortunately we did not have a show on in the Theatre that night.
