Interesting site and an imposing piece of history , a great dog walk around the moat.
Unfortunately the moat stinks and it is used to dump a range of items---does no one ever clean up these sites ?

Forth Brockhurst is one of the Palmerston Forts built to protect the naval dockyard in Portsmouth. It is of a completely different style to those upon the top of Portsdown Hill and make an interesting comparison to Fort Nelson.
The fort is only open from 11am to 3pm on the second and forth Saturdays of the month between April and October. It is free to enter but donations can be made towards it upkeep. The volunteers who make it possible to visit the site are friendly and on hand to tell you about the site. Parking is either pay in advance online or at the site. However there is no means to pay when you arrive. I just gave the cost (only £2) with a donation.
Once you enter it is surprising how large the site actually is. Entering through the keep you progress onto the parade ground surrounded by the ramparts with offices, workshops and accommodation set into them. If you visit on a hot day be aware that there is not a lot of cover, so a hat of some sort would be a good idea. Fort Brockhurst is preserved as close a possible to how it would have been when in use. Don't expect to see rooms full of exhibits like you do at Fort Nelson, which is a armaments museum.
An interesting place to visit when in the area and if you time it right, you may find that there is a heritage event, on which increase the opening hours slightly.

We attended the fort for Gosport heritage day, with the Queen sadly passing a day before the plan of having a display of military vehicles was cancelled but we wanted to see the fort regardless so still went. My husband had been a few times but I hadn’t so I wasn’t sure what this one would be like but it was a lot bigger than it looks! The keep is a small looking one but once you get around that and enter the barracks and drill square it just amazes you.
The only issue I would say which was abit of a let down was some of the volunteers didn’t really know a lot about the fort, so upon asking questions we got told things which upon looking into ourselves turned out to be completely wrong.
There wasn’t many of the rooms open but we got told it was because there was a lack of people there to open them, would of been abit better if there had been more open as there was a lot of people who said the same.
The fort though in itself is brilliant, it’s steeped in history and if you read up before you go you will have abit more knowledge of what is what.
The rooms which were locked we managed to see inside by putting the camera to the windows which was good as there’s quite a few slipper baths lying around and it was lovely to see that the rooms seem to be getting renovated.

We visited on a "Heritage Day". There were plenty of volunteers to take care of people.
Entertainment included a Samba Band and musket shooting display.
Plenty of thing to see and do.
But No Toilets were open and had to go to The Range for toilets and refreshments, not far too walk.

The fort itself wasn't open when we visited but with there being a moat it was a haven for wildlife. There was a heron in the water and we also saw a kingfisher as well as ducks and swans, also plenty of dragonflies and damselflies. We walked all the way round the moat which took around 15 minutes.

An interesting place and with free entry ) donations recommended) you can't ask for much.
The fort is large but aside from the keep you initially enter most rooms are closed and it appears the fort is used as storage for English Heritage with rows of shelves if you look through the windows.
Still an interesting place to visit and explore, climbing onto the walls etc.
Little to do for younger children however.
If exploring historical forts is your thing and you happen to be in the area on a day it's open this is perfect but I wouldn't make a specific trip of it.

Having realised the Fort is open the second Saturday this month and being free we wanted to check it out.
What a fabulous place!
We were asked if we’d like to make a donation when we arrived and were told brochures were £1 each. We handed over a donation and made our way in.
We spent around 2 hours having a look around and were able to walk along the top of the fort.
One part seemed quite eerie and cold so I took a closer look into the dark behind a locked gate. Peeking through I heard a whistle. Having looked online since my visit I have found that other visitors have heard whistling. Amazing!
Parking is available for free outside but can get very busy.

Amazing staff!
We had limited time due to closing but the kids (3-7) had a great time playing Victorian school and colouring!

It was my first time visiting there and the fact that it was a free entry was an added bonus. Lots of history and lots to see.

Free to get in spent a few hours looking around its nice to see the history of the local area living in Gosport traffic is not an issue but if your traveling from outside the area coming into Gosport at the wrong time during the week is busy would recommend a look around
