Looking just like any other old church from the outside the surprise hits you when you step inside, the church was elaborately decorated under the Patronage of the Duke of Chandos, before he lost his wealth in the British Government Scam known as 'The South Sea Bubble'.
Open for viewing most Sundays at 2 pm.

I learned of this church via Ian Nairn's splendid book, "Nairn's London." When you approach the church (I recommend visiting the ruin of St. John the Evangelist in Stanmore first and then walking down through Canons Park to this church) it looks like a quaint, old village church from the English countryside, dropped into a modern London suburb.
Once inside, however, you 'll see how special this place is. The interior is like a Baroque German church, with trompe l'oeil frescoes on the walls and, at the east end of the nave, an altar framed by a gorgeous wooden arch, and an impressive organ behind. George Frideric Handel was the court composer to the Duke of Chandos, who occupied the adjacent Canons Park estate and funded the renovation of the church interior in the early 1700s. Handel played this organ and the original keyboard is preserved in the church. The pew boxes are very old, beautiful wooden enclosures and the apse behind the altar features a lovely fresco of angels and sky, illuminated by the natural light entering through an unseen south window.
I had the good fortune of showing up precisely at 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning in early December as the High Eucharist service was about to begin. I attended the service, enjoying the liturgy and the atmosphere, and then stayed afterward to look around the church. The congregation is very friendly. One woman approached me and, when I explained that I'd come form America to see the church, was delighted and gave me a brief tour of it, including the mausoleum where the Duke of Chandos is buried. In the balcony at the back of the church is a lovely balcony, with boxes to each side, where the Duke of Chandos sat during church and to enjoy Handel's performances.
It was a wonderful Sunday experience and I'm so glad I made the effort to see the church and attend a service. The church is open on Sunday afternoon for viewing, too. You can reach it via the Jubilee Line, disembarking at the Canons Park station and walking five minutes east. Or, as I suggested, ride one more stop to the end of the line at Stanmore, see the old church ruin there, and then walk south through Canons Park to St. Lawrence. The church has a Web site where you can get information about services and visiting.
Highly recommended.

There is easy parking right outside the Church on Whitchurch Lane with the exception of 2-3pm Monday to Friday. The only time this can be problematic is if Barnet FC are playing at home or if there is an event at Wembley. There is a small Car Park behind the Church Hall in St Lawrence Close HA8 6RB
