Visiting Erekle II Castle in Telavi with my family was an enriching experience that combined history, stunning views, and a deeper appreciation for Georgia's royal heritage. Situated in the heart of the Kakheti region, this castle is not only a beautiful landmark but also a place full of stories from Georgia's past. Here’s a look at our experience during this memorable visit:
First Impressions
The castle stands proudly on a hill, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and the Caucasus mountains in the distance. As we approached, the ancient walls of the castle seemed to whisper stories from the past. The castle itself is quite imposing, built in a traditional Georgian architectural style, with thick stone walls and defensive towers that date back to the 17th century.
Exploring the Castle Grounds
As we entered the castle grounds, we were immediately struck by the well-preserved atmosphere. The castle is named after King Erekle II, one of Georgia’s most famous rulers, who was instrumental in consolidating the kingdom of Kakheti in the 18th century. Walking around the castle, we could see traces of its royal past, from the elegant arches to the strategically positioned towers that offered views of the surrounding landscape.
The Interior and History
Inside the castle, the atmosphere was calm and reflective. We wandered through the courtyards, exploring the various rooms and the royal chambers that still retain an air of old-world grandeur. Our guide shared fascinating stories about King Erekle II’s reign and his role in Georgia’s struggle for independence during the 18th century. The king’s influence on the region and his efforts to protect it from invaders were made clear through the castle’s history, and my family found the narrative both engaging and informative.
The Views
One of the most memorable parts of the visit was the breathtaking view from the castle’s upper platforms. From here, we could see the lush vineyards of the Kakheti wine region stretching out in every direction, as well as the majestic Caucasus mountains looming in the distance. The landscape was simply stunning, and it was easy to imagine the strategic importance of this location throughout history, as the castle was built to protect the kingdom from invaders and serve as a royal residence.
Family Moments
The visit provided plenty of opportunities for bonding as a family. We explored the castle grounds at our own pace, taking time to admire the view, snap photos, and reflect on the rich history that surrounds the place. It was also a chance to teach the younger members of our family about Georgia’s royal history, making the experience educational as well as enjoyable.
Local Culture and Surroundings
After touring the castle, we spent some time exploring Telavi itself. The town is charming, with narrow streets, local markets, and a welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed a meal at a nearby restaurant, sampling some delicious Georgian cuisine, including khachapuri and local wines, which are renowned in the Kakheti region. It was the perfect way to end our visit to Erekle II Castle, immersing ourselves further in the culture of this fascinating region.
Conclusion
Our visit to Erekle II Castle in Telavi was a highlight of our trip to Georgia. The historical significance of the site, combined with the stunning natural beauty surrounding it, made for a truly memorable experience. Walking in the footsteps of royalty and learning about the rich history of Kakheti gave us a deeper understanding of Georgia’s cultural heritage. It was a fantastic experience for the entire family, and one that we will cherish for years to come.

We spent 8 days with David in Kakheti, Tskaltubo, Tbilisi and Kazbegi. He is very knowledgeable about attractions, wineries, and history of Georgia. We had a custom itinerary and he was very flexible with the places we wanted to go. His prices are fair and he is always on time, plus he has some great stories! Thank you David for a wonderful trip!

We just had an amazing trip with David as our taxi driver and guide. David is great.
David knows his stuff and took us to some fantastic spots and showed us some hidden gems we would have never found on our own. His local understanding of Georgian wine and culture was great, and we learnt a lot from him.
What made the trip even better was David's easygoing personality. He made us feel comfortable and welcome from the start.
If you're visiting Georgia and need a great driver and guide, definitely go with David. Thanks, David, for an unforgettable trip!

We had the best trip with David exploring Georgia and the Kakheti region. David was extremely kind and a wonderful tour guide. He knew the answers to all of our questions and was extremely knowledgable about everything which truly made the experience so special. He was very flexible ensuring that we were happy with every stop and was super helpful in giving tips during the planning process. We were able to arrange the tour exactly to the places that we wanted to go and David was always waiting for us when we were finished. He even offered to extend the tour on our last day. His prices are extremely fair and much better than any group tour through a large company. He never tried to convince us to stop anywhere that we didn't want and always offered to make additional stops when we pointed out something that we passed by. David made the tour so memorable and his kindness and expertise of Georgia were hands down the best. HIGHLY recommend!!!

I contacted this person to ask for his prices, which he gave to me. I said I would contact him later. My battery died later on and I had to change it. When I could open it again, I found a message saying "thank you for your answer сука" (meaning "b*tch" in Russian). Read the screenshot and see for yourself if you want to go on a tour with this kind of individual.

David is unbeatable. He is totally fluent in English and both book and street smart on all the history and folklore of the local area. He prices like a taxi driver but really he is a combination of driver, guide, and translator. He is so honest and reliable. With him, we did a day of wine touring, another day of historical sites including David Gareja, and on the last day he drove us to Kazbegi, stopping to check out Pankisi along the way. He even helped us with some translation after our tour finished when we were in Kazbegi and my friend got hurt. Going out for a day with David is my number 1 recommendation while in Georgia. Thank you David!!

Wow! What a great experience. We had picked a few wineries to visit and looked around for a driver and David was available at an extremely reasonable price. He responded very quickly and was very flexible with our timing. His car is clean and his driving is fast but we felt very safe and secure. He is very personable and told us stories of his experiences growing up here and the massive changes he’s seen in the area.
Additionally, we had picked out a few wineries, to which David added a couple stops. Do yourselves a favor and just let David plan your itinerary. The places he took us were WAY cooler and had MUCH better and more local wines than the ones we had selected. At one winery, the person leading our tour remarked that he knew more about the region and their particular wine than she did! And told us how lucky we were to have him as our guide! :)
We are so glad we found David! We would recommend him to all our family and friends who wish to visit Georgia. We hope to meet him again soon!!

Found David in the lonely planet and communicated with him via Whatsapp/call. Initially agreed to a 3 days tour, from Tbilisi-Kazbegi-Telavi but ended up spending 6 days with him! We also visited Batumi and discovered together the Western wine region ‚Racha‘. I can highly recommend David, he is knowledgeable, speaks well English and drives safe & fast. Plus he has a good attitude of saying that ‚anything is possible‘ 💪 Thank you David!
