I knew this tragedy because I saw various documentaries, the film made a few years ago and read a lot of news about the story, but visiting these places and listening to the Guide who expertly accompanied us and explained every detail of what happened was a touching experience. Cost of the guided tour six euros.

I do not want to dwell too much on topics now well treated and known. The emotion is strong and I would like to give a Recommendation: go first to Longarone and look towards the dam, try to imagine the huge wave that comes at formidable speed from the very narrow gorge in front of the village, the very powerful wind that precedes the Holocaust. The dam is there, intact, a monument to wickedness, vanity and all that the lowest and most disgusting can represent the greed and stupidity of man. So many deaths, so many dead children, sixty workers wiped out of existence. And then go and see the monster up close; you will find him a quiet witness of our inability to govern the natural elements, of our protervia.... That's enough.... The dam can be seen accompanied by people of the Association "Vajont, the future of memory", kind and very prepared. There are photos and drawings that illustrate the history of the event very well. The walk on the dam is not for everyone, if you suffer from vertigo know that it is very hard to get to the opposite side and then go back; the path is adequately protected and despite that I was so scared (but I made it). If you want to complete the visit in a worthy way go to Casso where a panoramic terrace allows you to appreciate the dynamics of the tragedy and then at the end of the visit go to pay your respects in the monumental cemetery of Vajont in San Martino near Fortogna. The emotion is strong and I allow myself to give some advice: go first to Longarone and look towards the dam, try to imagine the enormous wave arriving at formidable speed from the very narrow gorge in front of the town, the very powerful wind that precedes the holocaust. Exciting visit to the sites of the Vajont Dam tragedy. Guided tour that tells the story of construction and disaster. The visit allows access to the walkway above the dam which also allows you to understand the daring engineering work of the time. from the side of the former lake you can walk down to touch the dam. I knew the story but only seeing it live you realize the enormity of what happened. Recommended then a visit to the museum of Erto for various photographic finds of the time and then to the village of Casso from which you have a full view of the landslide stage

Nice little walk found at All Trails. Definitely worth a look. Beautiful and family friendly with very few other guests - even though it is July

Very interesting guided tour. The duration was adequate not to lose the attention even to my teenage daughters.
The view from Casso gives an even better idea of the scale of the disaster.

The visit was very interesting. Our very good guide told the facts in a comprehensive and not at all boring way, also adding some family stories.
I had already been to the dam other times, but this guided tour is certainly an added value. I recommend it to all those who want to better understand what happened in 1963.

Sacred place of memory, a grandiose work, the highest for that period, but unfortunately it remembers 2000 victims.
Visiting the dam is not recommended with small children but the museum is recommended

A place to remember and reflect on the sense of responsibility which then, as now, has been missing several times. Innocent victims were killed on the altar of the God of Money. The “Vajont model” taught nothing.

Coming here, sixty years after what looks more like a massacre than a disaster, our thoughts inevitably turn to the more than two thousand victims of the massacre and the ignoble behavior that caused them. The dam was and is undoubtedly an authentic masterpiece of engineering, so much so that it remained intact, resisting forces twenty times more powerful than those it was designed to withstand. The fact is that it should never have been built, given the precarious hydrogeological characteristics of the place. Today it is still there, with all its tragic uselessness, given that, despite the heavy warning it represents, it does not seem to fuel a more solid and aware memory, nor a sense of respect for nature and responsibility towards future generations.

The guide was exceptional in telling, in a short time, the essential points of the story, intelligently touching on even the controversial points, and broadening the perspective.
The walk on the dam is spectacular.
Perhaps it would take a little more time: an hour of guided tour is too little for those interested.
