A lovely place to visit - lovely buildings with a remarkable history. Significantly, these old armshouses are still in use today.

Just on the High Street of Bruton this is a must visit. Step off the High Street into a different world, admire the buildings and learn about its history.

This is a very special place. You step off the high street into another world. There is a quadrangle which could be from a Shakesperean theatre. The is an old chapel to the left which visitors can enter. Inside it is very compact. What I found to be very moving was that anyone could ask for a prayer to be said to help someone that you knew awho was in need of help. The whole place has a feeling of calm and well worth a visit.

This delightful building full of untold histories has a courtyard, chapel and restored gardens which you can glimpse from the public areas. The stonework and detail are worth closer inspection.

Named after the founder and benefactor, Hugh Sexey, who was auditor to Queen Elizabeth I and James I, this site is well worth visiting. His statue is the one in the alcove to the right of the chapel entrance. On walking through the old entrance gateway into the courtyard, you sense a more calm and relaxed atmosphere compared to the very busy road outside. The accommodation is based around a lawn where croquet is played and though the buildings date from different periods, the local stone means they blend together well. The chapel with Jacobian pews and pulpit (not original to the building) is lovely and very well maintained and we were lucky enough to meet the chaplain of the hospital who, besides being a delightful man, was a mine of information about the hospital, it’s history and its present day use. If you see him, do speak to him, it will enrich your visit enormously.

What a gem these alms houses are. Retained in good period external condition dating back to early 1600’s they are still being used today with 27 residents when we visited. Certain parts are available for visitors and there is adequate information to read. Staff and residents we met were so nice too. Just on the street in centre of Bruton, should not be missed.

As this is an active alms house then you can't go round much understandably - the courtyard itself is gorgeous and reminiscent of an Oxbridge college - as you cross through into the courtyard you feel calm and there is silence. The Jacobian chapel is lovely and very well maintained. An excellent place albeit not one for spending too long over.

This is a magnificent Stewart building, how it survived the English Civil War which took place a year after its completion is surprising! Even more surprising is the fact that it is still in a use approximately equivalent to its original use. The detailing of the building complex is exquisite. The chapel with its dark oak interior is beautifully carved and a joy in its own right. Well worth just a quick pop in and a shirt wander about!
