Wednesday 18 September 2024, My usband and I decided to visit The Courts Garden under the care of the National Trust.
The Courts Garden is full of variety; this charming garden shows the English Country Style at its best. Peaceful water gardens and herbaceous borders with organically shaped topiary, demonstrate an imaginative use of colour and planting, creating unexpected vistas. We strolled through the arboretum with its wonderful species of trees and naturally planted summer and autumn bulbs.
The Courts Garden was laid out in 1901, and covers seven acres of which half is Formal Garden enclosed by yew hedges and half Arboretum. It contains features typical of the period – high hedges divide the garden into separate areas, which are densely planted and furnished with topiary and statues.
Sir George Hastings laid out the original framework, built both the Temple and Conservatory and placed many of the statues.
Sir George Hastings designs were expanded by Lady Cecile Goff, who lived here from the 1920’s onwards. Her daughter Moyra Goff enhanced the Arboretum, which surrounds the Formal Garden in 1952.
The essential layout has not altered since the 1930’s and the garden is a marvellous example of this period in English garden history. My husband and I took lots of photographs here as every twist and turn is a wonderful vista.
My husband and I had refreshments sitting out in the grounds of the Arboretum. My husband had tea and a slice of shortbread and I had fizzy elderflower water and a large slice of rocky road, which was really scrummy.
Later we found a bench in the sun overlooking the formal water garden and sat and sunbathed. I found inspiration here and I wrote a poem called ‘Colourful Courts’. We left this wonderful garden at closing time.

Pleasantly surprised by this National Trust, however disappointed there is no shop.
Didn't go into the house, due to burst pipe, we did walk around the gardens.
These are lovely, there are some formal gardens and also free gardens, I prefer formal if I'm honest.
Water feature can be picturesque however very surprised by how much algae there was.
Parking was very good and it is a lovely area.
I would recommend 😊

As we were staying only a few minutes walk away it was easy to visit the Courts. It was amazing to see how large the gardens actually are as does not look that big from the front entrance.
Amazing place, just beautiful being able to wonder around looking at various plantings and the vegetable, fruit garden. So peaceful with no rush to leave. No need to be an avid gardener, just take it all in !

A beautiful garden that is full of variety in terms of trees, plants and bushes including a very lovely water feature! It is relatively small but you could easily spend a couple of hours wandering around and identifying its key features which are signposted. The garden has also paid attention to the needs and curiosity of children. There is no cafe on site but there is a van that dispenses drinks and snacks. Nearby is free parking and a cafe/ restaurant where you can eat inside or outside in a scenic setting. The house and garden is owned by the National Trust and without membership the entry fee is reasonable.

This place is simply stunning this time of year!
Trust me on this, the pictures uploaded on other reviews do not do this place any justice whatsoever.
We parked in the village hall car park (signposted for use for the garden, and is free) and entered in the opposite side of the road.
Immediately you are greeted by an idyllic, manicured and meticulous garden. Into the manor house to scan the cards, and then out the other side you could easily get lost here for hours. The garden seems bigger than you think it would be from the road. There are mature trees, glorious borders full of colour. Water features. A couple of ponds. Topiary hedges. Plenty of benches.
It was a windy day but the sun was coming through the clouds which added beautiful light to the plants and a lovely warmth to the afternoon.
This has to be our favourite garden to date. The thoughtfulness of the layout and the variety of plants was a wonder to enjoy. It is seriously like you've entered a magical secret garden, every where you look is full of beauty and life. Yes, in another month or two when the trees are full and the weather is warm and the wisteria and other plants are in bloom it may be even better. But our visit in early April, with the apple and cherry blossom, the tulips and other border flowers in colourful bloom, and not many visitors, it felt pretty special.
