In this historic place, figures carved in stone blocks pay special attention. They are not large, but the highest are close to 2 meters. The carved faces are intriguing and unique. You can also see the cave and go through the stone gates. However, it is the stone obelisks that make the biggest impression.

Many 8000 years old sculptures which are almost in a similar shape but different sizes. I think the process of building the street and sun cover should be faster to protect these priceless human creatures

The archaeological site known as the Yeri city is in distance of 65 Km from Ardabil and 31 Kilometers in east of Meshkin-shahr next to Qarasu river.
The area of this historic region is 400 hectares is constituted of three parts namely military fortress, temple and Qosha tappeh. The fortress and temple dates back to 1450 BC and Qvsha hill dates back to 7 thousand years BC. The main temple in city of Yeri came out of earth Included more than 300 stones with heights ranging from 35 to 250 cm with human forms (no mouth)  that contain human face without mouth, or a hand and sword. Charles Burney knew its time as  Achaemenes period, but out of the scope of government.

I got goosebumps when we got to this wonderful ancient site. it used to be a temple, 8000 years ago! there used to be a city here. citizens took a stone , carved their face on it and put it in the prayer house as a totem. all the carved stones are mouthless except one which meant only the speaker of the temple could speak and that speaker was a woman. The women's stones are distinguished by their hair clips. There are several big grave stones there to as they buried people with their belongings (we didn't see anything seems they all were stolen before archeologists found out such site exists). There is small cave with a spring in it( now it's dried out but you can see its hole) the prayers had to wash themselves before entering the temple they also had to bend and pass the entrance gate to show their humbelness.I thing 2 hours would be enough to visit this amazing temple.

The temple of Shahriyah, which is about 8,000 years old, is an exciting and unique temple. The design of this temple are based on the constellation of Parvin cluster.

wonderful ancient stone figures...it's a must see if you are in Ardabil.
the guide said these stones back to 1500 to 500 BC but they found signs of human kind living in this area from 8000 years ago.
unfortunately many of stones has been destroyed by cold weather in lack of proper preservation.
we had to drive 10 kilometers from main road by our car. road to the cemetery is a back road and can't be reached by bus or mini-bus so be prepared for half an hour walk from village to temple.site has no admission fee. morning hours are better to visit because from 11:00 to 18:00 it is very warm in late spring & summer.

A visit to the Shahar Yeri archaeological site (whose name in the locally spoken language, Azerbaijani, means "city remains") allows the most evocative possible vision of carved menhirs from all over the Middle East.
In fact, there are some other menhirs of this kind in the area, but apparently they are just one in the republic of Azerbaijan and seven in Turkey; while the menhirs present in Shahar Yeri are more than 300, varying in height from 35 cms. to two and a half meters.
This would be enough to establish the exceptional features of the site; but there are many more reasons of interest.
There is the style of the menhirs: they represent stylized human figures, provided with hands, face, hairstyles, a sword; but without a mouth. We were told (but I could not control the news) that the lack of mouth was aimed to represent the rule of silence, to be adopted for respect of the holy site by those who visited it.
There is then the fact that the menhir field, which occupies the highest part of a hill, represents just the sacred area of a well organized settlement, that had moreover its housing area just below the top of the hill (where there are still some small natural caves), and its cultivated fields further down, towards the bottom of the valley.
Then there's the fact that the settlement, to which the menhir field refers, represents only one of the stages of occupation of the site, ie the era from about 1500 to 500 BC.
In fact, the settlement later gradually enters under the rule of the Urartu civilization, that since about 900 BC is recognizable as a unitary fact in the area around the "three lakes" - Sevan, Van and Orumiyeh - and that is considered the ancestor of Armenian civilization. The Urartians, among other things, build a stronghold in the area, which doesn't take into account the previous sacred area, and invades it with its walls.
Not only that: the history of the site can also be traced backwards, up to the seventh millennium a. C .: these are in fact the dates attested by the most ancient finds, which show the advantages that the site must have for the possible inhabitants.
Overall, this is really a site not to be missed.

This fantastic historical site is located in Meshgin shahar, Ardabil province. It seems like an ancient temple with strange huge stone figures. Some figures have sword in their hands and some others have no mouth. I really enjoyed visiting the site.
