The castle located on the river Bank of Ghezel Ozan, one of the most significant rivers of the north west of Iran both culturally and naturally. The river connects at least 4 cultural region, Kurdistan, Azarbayjan, Ghazvin and Gilan. Some other great cultural monuments and icons are also located in the area such as unesco world heritages Takhte Soleiman and Soltaniyeh. The castle itself, is carved inside a natural clif like structure well defended naturally against invador. The size and the shape is really impressive.

Magnifique site surtout à la tombée du jour ! Et les environs sont aussi splendides : les gorges, les vallées et les montagnes colorées....

"Behestan castle" is one of the 20 historical castles of Zanjan. The fort of the fifth century AH is estimated. Behestan castle, or Old Fort, is located in Mahanshan city in Zanjan province, along with the Ghezel Ozan River. The upper floors of this castle were used for defense and the lower floors were used as slum and food storage facilities. This castle is built in a rugged mountain ridge. The castle is demolished due to the rapid winds erosion, as well as the passage of the Ghezel Ozan River along it. Due to the specific circumstances of that period, the rulers have made the fort in order to defend themselves and the people. "Behestan castle" is one of the 20 historical castles in Zanjan. "Behestan castle" is one of the 20 historical castles in Zanjan. The builders of the castle, taking into account the original design, attempted to dig mountains and drain the soils and rocks and created the rooms. Then, every number added to its rooms, their communication paths have been added as corridors to the building. The castle's overall space was divided into three parts: rooms, corridors and walkways. Some gardens have a ghostly roof. In some areas, triangular or circular places on the walls are also included for the placement of a fissure. On the western and eastern sides of this castle there are zigzag rafts. These trails began once from the lowest part of the northern side of it, and now, like the devastation imposed on the core of the castle, it is not similar to anything else. Due to the erosion of the lower floors, it is dangerous and almost impossible to get on this road. The northwest side of the castle is one of the fortified and healthy fortresses of the fortress. One of the rooms above these steps is decorated with the arches of the Muslim Islamic mosque. Large yards with a width of one meter are also adapted from the same architectural style. There is a flat rocky castle, but nowadays this castle can be reached only by climbing due to the great destruction. The upper part of the castle is covered with plaster, and inside it is a pond of 7 meters in diameter, 3 meters from the stone and sandy. The water of the castle was provided with half-meter water pipes called "Ganges". On the western and eastern sides of this castle there are zigzag rafts. On the western and eastern sides of this castle there are zigzag rafts. Some attribute the fortress to the material time. The Medes entered the Iranian plateau through the estuaries and sides of the Ghezel Ozan River and settled in villages like Madabad, 15 km away from Maheshan. Defensive forts such as Behestan castle, 12 km away from Mahan, display beautiful architecture and artists. However, according to archaeological research, the fortress has been proven by the Achaemenid period until now. This fortress also survived in the post-Islamic period and until the fifth century. This castle was registered in the 1458th Fort of Behistan in the national monuments list, a unique castle which unfortunately has been on the brink of destruction due to the neglect of the officials of the country's cultural heritage, especially the province. Considering the construction of retaining walls along the Ghezel Ozan River is essential for the protection of the castle.

Driving from the main hwy Zanjan to Tabriz you turn off and head for Mahneshan and along the way you will see amazing colored mountains [better than Tabriz ] and sleepy villages. Just a few klms south of Mahneshan is these amazing rock castles. The best one is next to the river. Local name i think is Kohan Dezh.

This natural monument ( hoodoo ) has an amazing structure, and because of that especial shape during the historical periods some people use that for making the inaccessible castle.
