We went on this trail because it was labeled as a “must-do” in El Paso. However, we were disappointed with our experience. The drive was confusing and the stops on the trail were not well labeled. The area itself is not a touristy area and is a sketchier part of town.

I visited there on the presidential day. My purpose was just looking inside the churches, Ysleta, Soccoro, and San Elizario, respectively. However, I happened to meet a person who has great hospitality. I was able to learn about the chapel and Jail in San Elizario fortunately. It's worth visiting.

No one around the mission church. Interesting because I love churches. Not exceptional. Just visited the one shown here.

Definitely worth the visit! The ride from downtown El Paso was approximately 35 minutes. The trail is well marked with signage. You definitely want to drive-9 miles between missions. The missions were beautiful in their simplicity. One mission had great little “village “ around it-galleries, Shops etc. ( Socoro mission) In addition, just up the road (literally on the trail) a FANTASTIC brewery!!! Three Missions Brewery! Excellent beer -saying a lot, since I’m from Colorado where breweries are plentiful & great!! Rick, the owner, is Super hospitable, knowledgeable of the area and really threw out the welcome mat for us! But above all, his beer is FANTASTIC!! Stop at Three Missions Brewery - you will be glad you did! Also, I’ve never seen THE WALL in person, but while on the trail you can see THE WALL within 20 yards!!!

Nestled at the feet of the Franklins, is a lovely park called Madeline. If you get off the Scenic Trail, and cruise the neighborhoods, Some of the residential roads higher up are gated. Yet this one is available to all. M Pk is nestled in a very old (for El Paso) residential neighborhood, w/ a charming collection of unique architectural styles .surrounding. I understand locals pay a premium to face this park, and i can see why. After chatting it up with a local psychologist walking his dog, I learned local "old timers" gather at night to swap stories of both El Paso and Juarez. A wonderful way to enjoy the cooling night air. I wish I had some photos to share, yet if you cruise the Internet you can find plenty of pics. Please cure my lack of pics w/ your own. Thought it was a shame no one had posted anything yet.

Once I realized where to go it was an easy trail to follow with great signage. The missions are beautiful. Enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed this short drive to see the there churches - Ysleta, Socorro and San Elizario. All of the missions were open and didn't charge to enter. I understand that some people walk between them but this would be quite difficult so it was easier by car and there is plenty of parking at each church. Fascinating history.

Very interesting look into American /Mexican history. We learned not only about art, architecture, and religion, but also about the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande’s course impacted agriculture, geography, and political borders.

We stopped by the visitor center to get a map but came away with a lot more history and good information by the staff. History lesson spanned from the caravan of people and hundreds of animals traveling to El Paso to the settlement and building of the churches. Indian population played a key not only as opponents but also contributors.

From the visitor center is was an easy drive to the missions.

We could only visit two of the three missions during our time in El Paso. All were open but make sure to plan around mass schedule as these are still active churches.

Ysleta Mission was the oldest one and closest to the visitor center.

Sacorro Mission was our last mission visited. It was back from the road and located on a large piece of land.

Both missions had been rebuilt numerous times after floods and fires and were simple in design on the outside. Inside the main altars were also functional with transcepts on each side (with confessionals or smaller altars). Quiet and cool inside made for a solemn visit. the only other people inside were the gift shop workers.

Next time will finish with San Elizario Mission.

I did the tour on a Sunday morning after visiting the website for driving directions. The missions themselves were absolutely gorgeous, 2 had active services going on when I arrived so I did not interrupt and 1 was closed. The information though about what else to do along the route needs updating- I guess with covid stores and restaurants that were listed as stops were all closed or gone. It literally took me less than 90 minutes to do the entire mission trail. Perhaps doing this on a Saturday would have been better for additional things to see and do.
