The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail is hard to find because there is little to no signage, that we saw. Nor are there trail markings along the way. You basically just follow the beaten path. We ended up doing this trail from two different approaches. The first time we drove down a long dirt road with lots of potholes and the trail was rugged and through lots of prickly shrubbery. The second time we started from Shipwreck Beach, which I think if the official starting point, and the trek was much more enjoyable and picturesque. I would definitely encourage the hike starting from Shipwreck Beach. Lots of views and stopping points along the rugged coastline with the pounding waves of the ocean below. It was definitely the highlight. Shipwreck Beach was a great place to sit and relax in the shade and enjoy the Hawaiian atmosphere. The highlight of our first attempt was walking to the cave and seeing into that amazing site. We missed the opening hours of the cave, but the views from the outside were impressive. At that point we were also able to cross over a small bridge to visit a turtle refuge. The turtles are in enclosures and there wasn't any signage to explain why, or what type of turtles that they were.

Do not miss the cave, go all the way to the rear cave and talk to the docent. Go find the tortoise sanctuary past the cave as well. Great hike with kids. Just be mindful of golf balls when you’re on the trail next to the fairway.

While this is not quite as easy as everyone says - at least if you take the path along the coast, it is incredibly beautiful and worthwhile. On a hot day it can feel longer than 2 miles. On the way back, I took the inner trail which was very easy and much quicker. But the coastal trail is stunning and highly recommended.

The trails are hard to follow and are not well marked. The views are amazing if you are willing to go on some tough trails.

This trail is right next to the golf course and the Poipu beach is the end result! Beautiful walk and perfect as we are recovering from knee replacement surgery.

This is the hike that is a must-do for anybody and eveybody. Excellent coastal views the entire trip with minimal effort. It is a 2 mile out-and-back trail from Shipwreck Beach to the caves but going just half the direction gives you a superb view of the full trail. The caves just add a little more adventure to it. You can take the trail on the sunny side closer to the jagged coastline cliffs or go inner through the shade (consider on route back). Take advantage of this coastal trail you can't find in every seaside town in U.S.

Beautiful views of the cliff side/ocean. Multiple trails side by side so you can be closer or further from the edge. Part of the trail walks through the golf course which is minimally awkward. Starts or ends at Shipwreck beach depending on where you come from. End parking is towards a ranch with caves near by.

It's a short and easy trail but you can enjoy great view of pacific ocean and cliff. You can bring your lunch and have a picnic overlooking beautiful ocean. I saw many turtles and fish from top of trail. If you go Maha'ulepu beach, you should try this trail!

We started on the trail at sunrise - the best suggestion from reviews! The multiple paths can leave you disoriented at first, but watch your step, stay close to the oceanside, and you'll be fie. We wore sneakers, long sleeve shirts and long pants, but packed a towel, swimwear, and flip-flops with us (totally the way to go!). The backpack was handy in bringing a ton of water and some snacks for later. Don't get discouraged when you start guessing where the path will lead you. We skipped the cave (was too early - they don't open it until 10am). Once we came to a beautiful beach, where the river met the ocean, we switched into the beach gear and kept going (finding a couple of cool sea shells made it even more interesting). We set up camp at the end of the sand, where there's a little beach between the rocks, shaded with gorgeous pines. After some playtime in the water and snacking, back we went towards the Shipwreckbeach. FYI, the path didn't stop where we did, and if the sun didn't beat on us as soon as we stepped out of the shade, we'd kept going until running out of the path. Maybe the next time...there definitely will be the next time! This is a MUST-DO on Kauai!

Is there a particular time of day that is best to do this hike? I’ve read that it can get hot so I would assume morning.

Morning or in the afternoon I would do the hike. Remember when you start in the morning you have to go back in the heat. In the afternoon it's still hot but not that much like at noon and it's getting calmy when you hike back. But in the morning you can see the sunrise. 😉 Never forget a hat, enough water (more than usually as it's a hike) and a snack. Have fun and enjoy it. ☺️

there is a name for the beach beside the labyrinth- I think it is written on the little description sign at the labyrinth. The name is Hawaiian language for 'Pearl Bay' or Oyster Bay? thanks you

Wondering if what you are seeking is called, Momilani Kai or "Heavenly Pearl Cove"?
Dog friendly?

An updated question from my previous one.
Approximately how long is it in miles from Shipwreck Beach to the cave? How long did it take you to hike it?
Mahalo in advance.

1 HOUR - 1-1/2 HOURS IS ABOUT RIGHT - take your time to enjoy, BE SURE to bring water. It is mostly in the sun.

How long to hike this trail for the average person from Shipwreck Beach to the end of the trail (one way)? Is it a safe hike in normal weather? How long is it in mileage?

It is about 2 miles each way and should take a few hours. A good chunk of it is just walking on the beach. Nothing strenuous and good for all levels.

Where does this hike begin? Where do you park?

Going east to west, park at public parking located at the end of Ainakoa St (30 spots). Or park on Poipu Rd and walk 400 meters to the beach.
Going west to east, follow Poipu Rd, sign to CJM Country Stables (past Golf course) and park at Punahoa Point (dirt road/dirt trails). Close to water and Makauwahi Cave Trail. Use Google Map (Satellite mode) as visual reference before going.

We have that there also a trail from Shipwreck beach going right instead of left. If so, where does it end up.

Same answer: facing the ocean, going right gives you a paved walking path that windes along the water and eventually fizzles out at the condos. Going left gives you the trail.

You just walk outside of the Hyatt through the pool area and onto the beach, which is called Shipwreck's Beach. Now while facing the ocean, turn left. You'll see some cliffs overlooking the beach; that's where the hike begins. Walk over to the cliffs and look for a path up. The path isn't well-defined, but the cliffs aren't very steep, so it's pretty easy to get to the top.
