The guides work together to make sure their guests have a great experience. Great big 5 and ugly 5 sightings!

TripAdvisor is not cooperating so this is a more detailed review of our stay at Idube. The very short version of the review is at the Idube Game Reserve Lodge page. Below is what we really wanted to say about Idube, all of which is great!
We stayed two nights at Idube and three nights at their sister lodge, Lukimbi. Overall, I would highly recommend both lodges. Sabi Sand is known for great animal sightings but based on my research, the lodges are mostly also on the higher end budget-wise. We found Idube to be a great value, particularly, with the offer they were providing of staying 5 nights between the two lodges with Lukimbi being the more expensive of the two. I’ll write a separate review for Lukimbi on their page.
Lodging: We were in their standard suites. In advance of our arrival, the lodge reached out to confirm how we wanted the beds arranged. We had a double for my husband and me and the kids had their own room with two twin beds. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. We were reminded to keep the doors to the rooms closed to avoid any creepy crawlers or monkeys from getting in. Each room had a safe for locking valuables though we couldn’t get the safe in one of the rooms to work. The reality is that we actually didn’t spend that much time in the rooms. Between the game drives and the bush walk and the meals, there just wasn’t a lot of down time in the room (see further comment on this on the Lukimbi review). I’m sure that one could have paid more for newer accommodations with more modern fixtures, but given that these lodges just pop up out of the bushveld, we were really impressed.
Food: Food was not buffet; it was individually plated and there was plenty of it. We thought it was quite good and well presented. While we are not foodies, we do enjoy good and well prepared food. We thought that Idube, as well as Lukimbi, did a great job here. Also, at both lodges, during game drives, snacks were individually prepared with a set for our family and a separate set for the FJ and Congive (and James and Michael at Lukimbi), presumably for Covid reasons. We thought that this was a smart safety measure at both lodges that we very much appreciated. At Lukimbi, when we shared a game drive with another couple, the snacks were separated and labeled, one for each group. None of the rest of the lodges we stayed at did this for any of the sundowners. There probably wasn’t a huge risk at the other lodges but it did make us think twice and we reminded the kids to take whatever they touched and they were mindful to only touch one piece of the jerky or dried mango (both delicious). In any case, we loved the fact that Idube and Lukimbi pretty much eliminated the risk altogether.
Drinks: Drinks were not free other than tea and coffee. There is a charge for bottled water also, which we were happy to pay for, to avoid any issues. The drinks were very inexpensive compared to what we would pay in the states.
Game drives and wildlife: FJ was our guide and Congive was our tracker. We were pleasantly surprised to have just the four of us in our truck for all the game drives. FJ was very knowledgeable about all the wildlife, from the Big 5 to the smallest birds (the birds in Africa are absolutely gorgeous!). Congive was an incredible tracker. One night on the way back to the lodge, he saw a chameleon in a bush and asked FJ to stop so that we could see it. We don’t know how he managed to see it! The trucks were Toyota Land Cruisers and completely open (no top, which is different from Lukimbi). Game drives start at 6 and so we had our wakeup call at 5:30, took 15 mins to get ready and then walked to the lodge for coffee, tea and some biscuits before heading out on the game drive. If you are sharing a game drive with someone else, best not to be tardy to hold others up. The Idube staff had hot water bottles on our seats with thick fleece blankets covering them so when we sat down on the seats, the seats were nice and warm. The hot water bottle covers were also fleece and secure so no leaks. Between having a beanie, gloves, packable down jacket, long sleeve shirt, long pants and the hot water bottle and blankets, we were plenty warm enough for the morning game drives.
For the afternoon game drives, best to have sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. My husband and son had the packable Barmah hats and I had one of the Sunday afternoon sunhats. My daughter had an adjustable straw hat. All the hats had straps, which is essential from keeping the hat from blowing off your head in the wind. Also, bring a jacket because it gets chilly towards the end of the drive.
We arrived on the first day for lunch and an afternoon game drive, had morning and afternoon game drive the next day and morning game drive the last day before heading to Lukimbi. Between all those game drives, we saw the Big 5 multiple times. The wildlife viewing in the area was very good; in fact, it was so good that we started to get jaded: “oh, it’s another hippo…”, LOL. I don’t remember the exact number of hectares of Idube’s traversing area but they share traversing rights with 4-5 other lodges. As a result, there were other game drives happening at the same time (everyone is on the same schedule) and FJ had his radio on all the time. When there is a sighting, the guides from the various lodges in the traversing area share on the “open channel” what they have found and the location. The other guides then coordinate as to who is going to join in the sighting and what “position” they will be in. In order to respect the wildlife, they don’t allow more than 3 vehicles to be at a sighting at the same time. It was really wonderful to see the coordination and collaboration amongst the guides at the various lodges. If wildlife viewing is your priority, and you want to be able to check the box for the Big 5 and as many animals as you can possibly see, Idube is perfect.
We also went on a bush walk with FJ and Congive and another family of four. It was our first bush walk and we started with an orientation to ensure that everyone stayed safe. We had to walk in single file, no talking while walking, if we saw something we whistled. FJ led the walk and Congive brought up the rear. Given these safety rules, it’s no wonder that children only 16 and up are allowed on the bush walks. That said, after discussing with FJ, and probably after seeing how our 14 yo daughter behaved, he was comfortable allowing her to go on the walk. I could see younger children being a challenge on the bush walk; it’s really up to how well you think your child can behave. As it happened, we ended up seeing a lion and elephants on the bushwalk. We were glad that FJ had his shotgun ready.
Schedule: The schedule is pretty packed, which was a surprise to us. 5:30 wake up call, 6:00 game drive, come back around 9:00, have breakfast, finish about 10/10:30, go out on bushwalk at 11, come back around 12:30, a little bit of downtime, lunch at 2:00, afternoon game drive at 3/3:30, back at 6:30, dinner at 7. As I mentioned in my overview post in the South Africa forum, we were here with our 14 yo daughter and 16 yo son; they were very willing participants but even getting them up and keeping them going wasn’t always easy. This was a very different kind of vacation from lying on the beach in Hawaii.
Staff: We found the staff to be very welcoming and friendly. They seemed genuinely happy to have us there after the challenges of Covid. The staff is up early getting everything ready for the guests and the clean-up after we have long gone back to our rooms to sleep. We were grateful that the owners of the two lodges managed to keep everything together and reopen after lockdown.
Safety: Because the fencing is only able to keep elephants out, it is possible for other animals (including PDA’s, “potentially dangerous animals”) to enter the lodge area. After dinner, you must be escorted back to your room, but you are able to walk from your room to the lodge on your own in the morning before the game drive. Though we had small USB-chargeable flashlights with us (something that I read on TripAdvisor was a “necessity”), we only used one of them once, and managed to lose another somewhere along the trip. If you’re looking to pack one less thing, and you are in lodges similar to Idube, you probably don’t need a flashlight. We never felt afraid while at any of the lodges (other than the enormous spiders that I saw at Chobe Game Lodge… read that review for more details).
Laundry: Laundry was not included in the price but it was very reasonable. I think that our entire family’s laundry for two days was done for about $20. So long as you have it in the bag by the time you leave for the morning game drive, it will be returned before dinner.
Transfer: Idube arranged for our transfer to Lukimbi and the cost was just added to our bill at Idube, which made it easy. The transfer company is one that they use regularly and so we were comfortable that everything would go smoothly. The drive from Idube to Lukimbi is about 3.5 hours. I think that we left Idube at about 10:30 and we got to Lukimbi at about 2:00. Getting to Kruger National Park was quick from Idube but it’s a long way to get from the park entrance to Lukimbi and the roads are essentially dirt roads.
Gratuities: A recommendation is provided in the room with envelopes. We just put the gratuity on our credit card.
Wi-Fi was available but not the strongest.

- sehr freundliches und herzliches Personal
- täglich viele Wildtiere zwischen den Bungalows
- immer hervorragendes Essen, wie man es eigentlich in der Wildnis kaum erwarten würde.

A great lodge! AC, comfortable bed, porch in the cabin. Great food 3 times a day. Excellent and helpful staff. The guides and trackers are the best. They will get you not just a distant sighting but up close views. Many animals and of dirt and paved roads. WE WILL GO THERE AGAIN!

We travelled to Idube Lodge for the second time and the environment was so different, it was incredibly dry, the waterholes in places were empty, however this created a vast challenge for the trackers an drivers and they absolutely delivered, They worked with nature and not only showed us the wildlife, Brandon did a star gazing session and exposed his vast knowledge on the universe. Exceptional stay, the accommodation was outstanding as was the service. Thanks Idube, see you next time

Wildlife viewing in Idube is spectacular! Guiding is world-class and leopards literally wander by the lodge. Please read my full review on the Idube Game Reserve Lodge.

I have a few tips below for future guests to make the most of your stay at Idube, but first an overview of raves. I love that this is a more laid-back and casual reserve and lodge. By that I mean it offers great comforts and amenities, nicely appointed cabins and rooms, and pampering service, but you can wear your jeans and sneakers to dinner.
I loved that we could laze privately on our cabin's back deck, dipping our legs into our personal mini pool or beside the main pool, or in the cool of the indoor patio of the main lodge and from any of these vantage points we could watch a family of warthogs and several nyala who wandered into the grounds each day to graze, the male nyala occasionally grappling horns to assert their lustiness. Occasionally vervet monkeys would scamper through the treetops as well and a genet stealthily explored the dining area one night, perching amidst the coffee cups.
The game drives are, of course, the raison d'etre and every outing rewarded us with incredible up-close views of animal profiles and action. Our ranger Brogan and tracker Culture ensured that not only did we find great sights, but that we were well-positioned in the midst of the action to take photos or just watch. And the thrill of off-roading, jouncing through brush and ruts, to get to that just-right spot to see a leopard emerge from the shrubs, added to the excitement. During our 4-night stay we encountered all big 5, some of them multiple times, plus many others.
We dined and drank heartily throughout our stay. Drinks are not part of your upfront reservation costs but are so reasonably priced. The variety of food was excellent and it was part of the adventure to try kudu one night and have salmon the next.
Tips: There is a small exercise room at the lodge -- I wish I'd paid attention to this and brought running shoes rather than hiking boots so I could've used it. There's not really any way to get any cardio exercise in any other way there given that the lodge grounds are small (nowhere to go jogging) and you're sitting in the safari vehicles during outings. We did a bush walk one day but running shoes would've served as well for that as boots.
Don't fill up on the continental breakfast offerings before you find out what entree options they offer. We enjoyed some fine omlettes.
Take a book and binoculars and relax for a while in the observation bunker looking out onto the pond. It's a cool spot in hot weather and you might get lucky and have your patience rewarded by seeing something cool go by.

Our group of 4 spent 3 nights at Idube Game Lodge located in the heart of Sabi Sands Game Reserve. We enjoyed the 2 chalets that are connected, called the Makubela Suites. From the moment we arrived, Michelle and Charita made us feel right at home. Throughout our stay, they are more like friends, always making sure we're enjoying our time here.
Our suites are decorated beautifully. Equipped with AC and heat and a ceiling fan, it is comfortable in any weather. Double sinks in the bathroom, with a shower and tub. Also has an outdoor shower. It also has a viewing platform, we often watched animals stroll on by: nyalas, warthogs, monkeys. Each evening we got a turn down service. The bed is very comfortable. The quiet evenings were great since we woke up so early each day for the morning game drives.
Meals here are outstanding. Breakfast and lunch are served in the open air structure next to the swinging bridge leading to the hide for animal viewing near the waterhole. It is buffet style and you can mix with other guests, talk about the activities and get to know other travelers. We really liked the interactions. Dinners are served in the boma, with a roaring fire. The multi-course dinners are always beautifully presented, as well as delicious. Our friends celebrated their wedding anniversary here, they served our group dinner in the special sunken area with a complimentary bottle of champagne. That was super special.
Let's face it, the most important part of a safari is the game drives. We went on 3 morning and 3 evening drives. Our ranger/guide Cameron and tracker Ronald are simply superstars. Their hard work made our experience A++++. They seem to enjoy each other's friendship, and made our happiness their #1 priority. Our very first drive, 5 minutes into the trip we saw a pack of wild dogs. The abundance of animals was amazing: Big Five; wild dogs; zebras; giraffes; hippos, impalas, nyalas, hyenas. One morning Ronald got off the vehicle to track down a leopard, instructed Cameron to wait on the other side, sure enough, out came walking the leopard!! We had leopard viewing on 5 out of our 6 game drives. A couple of times, we viewed the "kill" impala hanging up in the tree, with the leopards just hanging out!!!
The animal viewing is more than just a "zoo" experience where you get a glimpse of them. We really appreciated Cameron and Ronald that provided closeup observations: watching a baby elephant getting "cheeky"; 2 male elephants shaking the fruit tree; hippo running (out of water), supposedly to be rare; 2 wildebeest locking their horns. They also made sure we got to see the wild dogs the second time near the river. One evening, we were leaving to return to the lodge after viewing lions. In the dark came the lioness walking back on the road to the pride. All the lions starting roaring and calling. Out came the cubs to greet their mom. What a moment!! All of this and they still made sure we had morning tea/coffee and sundown drinks!! Unbelievable attention to service.
While everyone will experience different things on safari, we really appreciated what this lodge provided during our 3 nights stay. The indescribable feelings will be with us long after our Africa trip. When we return to Sabi Sands again, we will not look anywhere else but Idube!!

We stayed at Idube for 4 nights with our 2 teenage sons and my 80 year old mother. We all had an amazing experience and would highly recommend this lodge.
From game viewing where we were literally metres away from leopards, lions and elephants to delicious food at all meals to clean ,comfortable accommodation Idube ticked all the boxes. Our thanks to all the friendly and helpful staff(Michelle, Andrew Peter and Able) that made our trip a memorable one but special mention to our guide,Cameron and our tracker, Ronald who were professional, informative, enthusiastic, personable and caring. Our safety never felt compromised whether we were 4WDing through the bush tracking a leopard on the hunt or sitting quietly while a huge elephant glided silently behind the truck. Their determination to share their passion for the bush and its beautiful wildlife made our holiday amazing. We went on to spend another 4 nights in a different lodge in another area but quite honestly we'd been spoilt with the amount and variety of animal sightings and the hospitality at Idube.

Is this near Hazyview? What are the things we should watch out for?
I visited South Africa in Jan 2017 and we were stopped by the traffic police who extorted 20,000 rand from us

Hi!
Me and my wife are in Cape Town from 12-th March 2017 intill 28-th March 2017.
We'd like to enjoy 3-5 days safari.
Questions:
1. What is a price for 2 persons inkl. transfer from-to airport?
2. How long staying with you it takes to se (hopefully) Big5?
3. How do I book your safari?
Regards
Alek
