A step back in the history of where Winslow Homer painted some of his most iconic sea paintings. Great tour of the ocean cliffs that was his inspiration.

The studio is currently closed fir the summer, but can be seen across the lawn from the cliff walk . A pretty view even if you can’t get in it now

While I really enjoyed seeing Winslow Homer’s home and studio, upon looking what we paid for the tickets, I suffered a little sticker shock. True, it goes for a good cause—supporting the arts. But still, $65+ seemed a little high (it does include admission to the museum as well). You meet at the Portland Museum of Art and a van takes the group to the studio. That is the only way to visit. The ride over takes about ½ hour and you spend about 45 minutes to an hour in the studio and the surrounding grounds. The studio itself has been somewhat renovated, but it really doesn't have much by way of furnishings or belongings from when Homer lived there. It was interesting to learn about the artist, and the coastline is beautiful, but having visited a number of other artist studios, I felt this one wasn’t one of the better ones. The ticket prices does include admission to the Art Museum.

We took the 2.5 hour tour through the Portland Art Museum
Tour costs $65 per person for non museum members in season; slightly cheaper off season.
Our guide was quite good; talked about the artist outside the studio before leading us down to the seashore to see some of the areas Homer had painted.
Afterward we went inside the studio where the guide continued to give additional information about the artist.
An informative morning.

On a recent tour of the studio we were met with near perfect weather and great vistas including the cannon rock and the view that inspired "Weatherbeaten". The facility has been restored to its previous era grandeur. It's a great opportunity to sample the quiet splendor of Prouts Neck as well, which is otherwise difficult as it is a private neighborhood. In touring the studio, we're given a glimpse into the otherwise mysterious life of the artist. He seemed to have been an eccentric dude.
The staff at the studio are equally wonderful - our favourite being Gail, a docent from Portland Museum of Art that led are particular group. Recommend visiting!

Joining a tour out of the Portland Museum of Art, I am sure from reading here, is the best way to visit Winslow Homer’s Studio, but, as also described, the tours are limited and few. Although I called the Museum months in advance, the tours for the days we would be in Portland were fully booked. So, an alternative is to walk in and see the outside of the Studio and, most importantly, the shoreline in front of the studio, which served as model for so many of Homer’s seascapes.

Half of Prout’s Neck, where the studio is located, is a private gated community. No parking is available anywhere on Prouts Neck, except for the Black Point Inn. If it is off season I read that people make reservations for lunch at the Inn and then were allowed to park there to do the Cliff Walk (see Prouts Neck Cliffwalk for information), that runs in front of the studio.

If that is not possible, park at Ferry Beach (NOT Ferry Beach State Park) for $10 and walk a mile down the road toward Black Point Inn. Keep walking along the road straight ahead past the Inn. It is about another half mile when you see the simple gate (it is operated by keypad, unmanned). Just before the gate on the right is a driveway with a sign that says PRIVATE half way down. Walk down that drive and before you come to the sign, on the left you will see the entrance to the Cliff Walk with a sign stating so. You need to walk down the drive to see this entrance. Follow the path along the shore a short way. The second house in is the studio. You can investigate the shore line and then follow the path up to a small wooden gate and up to the studio. There are no signs saying to keep out. They make it so difficult to find the place that that is enough to keep people out.

From there you can simply walk back to the gate, walk around the wide path at the gate where bikes go in and out and walk back the way you came. All tolled it is about a 4 mile walk round trip and well worth it to see the rocks from which Winslow Homer painted.

We visit Portland annually and for some time have wanted to take the PMA's tour of Homer's Prouts Neck studio. This year the stars aligned and we were able to book tickets. The opportunity to see the actual home and studio where Homer painted many of his masterpieces, as well as the original spots on the rugged coast of Prouts Neck from which those paintings were derived, was fabulous. Unfortunately we had a very garrulous guide who interspersed too much of her own personal history in a tour that was supposed to be about Homer. So, while she covered the basic biographical details of Homer's life and identification of the spots on the coastal walk from which he painted his well-known works, I could not but feel that there were additional anecdotes or observations that she could have offered about his life that were instead were supplanted by hers.

We both love art and visiting people's homes. Although pricy, this trip was worth it for us. You get entrance to to Portland Museum of Art which is a good place to start. They have a small but well balanced collection of Homer and several other Maine artists of the era and European artist as well. There are some wonderful John Singer Sargent portraits and a Whistler.
We had a25 minute van ride to Proust Point and the restored studio. Only 12 people on tour plus a well versed docent. Ample time to take in this artist's studio and environs and to walk along the sea cliff and imagine his vista. See the church across the street if you can. The restoration is done to perfection. It is a glimpse into another time and place.

We went to Homer's studio on a cold raw drizzly day. It was definitely "Homer" weather. The surf was up as it was high tide. You could easily see what attracted Homer to Prout's Neck. The studio was interesting, although a little sparse with Homer items. All in all it was very informative. You must make reservations through the Portland Museum of Art so planning ahead is a must as a limited number of spaces are available every day.

Three generations had an enjoyable Spring afternoon on this tour from the PMA via private van. Very knowledgeable docent (tour guide). Small groups make it more intimate. Chance to walk along the rocky coast or just hang out in the studio and immerse yourself in what Homer lived everyday. A Gem!
