This place is the best low cost fun to be had in Crested Butte. The museum is donation only, and the exhibits are cool. There is an old gondola, train puzzles for little kids, a big town model with a model train for the big kids, a scavenger hunt with candy prizes, some amazing history about the old mining town days, a massive elk who has quite a story, too. The front of the place is a time capsule of the old owner’s hardware store and it’s cool to see the old products and prices from when it was once the gas station. Cozy reading nooks and chairs a great spot to bring coffee and hear stories from the nice guys who work in the museum store.

This is a cute little museum. It has a scale model of the town and info on the geology of the area and skiing development. It is to get to. It is on the main street in town. There is a free shuttle that runs from Crested Butte Mtn Resort down to the town of Crested Butte in the valley. During our stay/season it was running every 15 minutes.

I always try to visit local museums, to better understand the local history and people who live there.
This is very small museum, but explains a lot about the region and the city.
City of coal miners has been hit by the tragedy of mining explosion.
There are some old pictures and maps, some nice displays.
Mining is a history, but the current days are different. Beside of skiing in winter, mountain biking is a major attraction of the region.
Big section of the museum focus on this topic, displaying old and new bikes and whole other accessories related to that.
I recommend this place.

We make a point to check out small town museums. This one has an entry fee; adults $5 and under 12 yrs old is free. Crested Butte (CB) museum, in what was a Conoco decades ago, has a nice bit of local history and friendly staff. This review is primarily for the walking tour with Glo. Glo has lived in the town many years and was a wealth of knowledge and entertainment for the tour. Her bits and pieces of nostalgia were a fun way to learn about CB and surrounding area. Before a ski town, CB was a mining town and the entire Gunnison area has some interesting history and some interesting characters to go along with it. In the front room of the museum is a wall of photos of the old timers who lived there back in the day. The back room has even more of the story and a mountain biking history section from the 1970s that is particularly fun if you have an interest in the sport.

We stopped here for a bit to learn more about Crested Butte. It cost us $5 per person to do so. The museum part is rather small but you can learn some things about the area's history. If you are into mountain biking, there is more to learn. We didn't care about that part. The first room is devoted to gift items and I managed to find something to buy.
What I took from this town is that it gets really busy and you probably don't want to drive a car around the small town.

$5 admission, and basically one large room that covers the basic history of the town and the region, including the Ute tribes that predated settlers of European descent. The negative impact of mining on health and environment is not explored (check out Telluride's museum for that angle), but there is some intriguing coverage of the transition of the town governance from the mining/ranching families to the young people who moved there in the 70's (I will refrain from calling them hippies...), early skiing, and the birth of the mountain biking industry.

Unfriendly staff do not greet visiters. Small exhibit not much older than 1955. Some good cheap gift items. No museum quality items.

Cool diversion right downtown. Everything from coal mining to Mt Bike history. Arguably Mt. biking started in Crested Butte with a guy stealing the deraillier off his sisters 10 speed and adding to his fat tire townie.

There is a large area to look through for great points of interest on the history of CB,. They also have an additional area for a nominal fee. Very interesting pieces of history to learn about the area.
