This was one of the more enjoyable hikes I had while camping on the North Rim. There are some great views along the way as the trail alternates from going along the rim and through a quiet pine forest. Plenty of shade along the way and the trail is fairly easy. Awesome vista at Widforss Point. Take breakfast and enjoy the views before your hike back. Great half day hike!

Even the North Rim of the Grand Canyon can be overcrowded these days. So, to escape the crowds, take one or two hours and take a hike on the Widforss trail. You don't have to hike the full five miles, one-way. Just 1.5 miles will yield great views and isolation. The start of the trail does climb steeply, but after that it is mostly level, with only a few more ups and downs.

Wonderful trail: easy up and down through ponderosa pine forest along the rim with wonderful views and lots of shades; no mules and saw less than 10 hikers. We did it in the afternoon after a hard hike down North Kaibab Trails to Redwall Bridge in the moning; and loved the smell of ponderosa pines.

We hiked Widforss Trail through a ponderosa forest to Widforss Point. The ponderosas were interspersed with aspens and ferns wherever fire had cleared space. And certain parts were tree graveyards, with limbs and timber tumbled together like pick-up-sticks. The trail went in and out of the trees and occasionally touched the rim of the Grand Canyon, giving us tantalizing glimpses before sending us back into the woods. The only sounds were the birds and our own footfalls. We nearly smothered in the aroma of pine. Widforss Point, the end of the trail, provided wonderful views. What more to say?

This is a moderate hike with some good views of a side canyon of the Grand Canyon. It is mostly shaded.

We had done this hike years ago, but did not really remember it. So when we were in the neighborhood we decided to try it again. It's 10 miles long, and we had a 6 hour drive coming up, so we decided to just go in two hours, then turn around. As it turns out, it took us exactly 2 hours to get to Widforss Point. On the way in we didn't see anyone on the trail (we started at 7:15 AM). Shortly after we left we ran into two people (not together). But as we got closer to the trailhead there were more and more people on the trail (we saw at least 24 others all together, so it's a moderately travelled trail - but if you go early, you will probably be alone!). The trail is long but not strenuous - but not flat; lots of ups and downs, except for a nice, flat stretch through the forest. The trail has great canyon views and overlooks for a good part of the way, except of course for the forest section. We had lunch at the point, then headed back. It took us just over 4 hours, including the lunch break. Really a nice hike!

We stayed at the North Rim for 3 days and wanted to complete a trail that was not too long but not overly easy as well. This trail is perfect if you are looking to kill a couple hours. Magnificent views of the rim and of the area in general along the entire length of the trail. We went a couple days ago in July 2017, temps in the North rim hovered in the mid 80s, it was a pretty warm day. Fortunately, for almost the entire length, you are under trees and the shade it provides helps to cool you off. Nonetheless, we took 3 liters of water each as there is no water sources along the trail.
For the most part, the trail is on leveled ground, a few steep areas you have to walk up or down - there is no climbing needed along this trail. The trail is well maintained and clean, areas of trees that have fallen on the trail have been cut away. We saw deer, horned-toad, butterflies and grasshoppers - no flies or mosquitoes to worry about.
At the trailhead, the sign states it is 10miles round trip and an average hiker can complete it in 4-5 hours - I would say that is pretty accurate, we completed it in about 4 hrs and that is after resting for close to half hour at the end of the trail. The only other 'long' hike we've done was at Mount Lafayette in New Hampshire. At the end of the trail, there is a picnic or just relax under the trees and enjoy the view before heading back.
In the summer take plenty of water and a hat, areas with no shade can get pretty hot. I don't think the entire length of the trail gets a lot of visitors. We saw plenty of people in the visitor center and multiple cars parked at the North Kaibab Trail parking lot. There were about 6-7 cars at the parking lot for the Widforss Trail, but only saw 2 other groups that were on their way back after reaching the end of the trail - I don't think many complete it all the way - it gets pretty lonely once you get past half way in the trail and may be boring to some since the last 2 miles is mainly in the forest away from the rim. I recommend taking hiking shoes/boots over sneakers, I think it is more comfortable for long hikes. This trail is definitely worth doing if you are in the area.

Tips: Wear hiking boots/shoes; take plenty of water during summer months; start early in the day.

My dad and I took this hike while we were on the north rim. It's about 10 miles round trip. The park provides you with a little pamphlet that corresponds to marked pegs on the trail that explains the difference storical or important facts about the Park, wildlife, trees or rock formations. Unfortunately, we both forgot our cameras this day. Bummer! Because the views were incredible. It's a good hike so you need to bring food, water, have energy and be in decent shape. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in good shape.

We hiked many trails during our tour of Arizona/ Utah and this was right up there. Unfortunately we didn't have time to hike whole trail only did about 3 miles in but what views! Quiet and peaceful even in August. We found the going easy. Remember to pick up a map at the trailhead it gives lots of interesting information.

I've just returned from a 17 day trip to UT, NM, AZ, and CO. We hiked a lot of trails through National Parks and I have to say that this particular trail was my favorite!! Not only does it include stunning views of the Grand Canyon but the trail winds up and down rocky mountain sides and through tall forest trees with chipmunks everywhere. I suggest you get the informational paper that goes with the trail. We picked ours up at the North Rim visitor center. This little piece of paper will point out spots on the trail you wouldn't other wise notice and made for a very educational hike with my kids. The trail in not overly strenuous. My children are 12 and 10 and they handled it extremely well (of course we do a lot of hiking). But if you are not a frequent hike just take a few short breaks after climbing an you will be just fine. This trail is a must see!!
