Good stop for a coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Can't rate the museums as did not go in. Small areas with gifts and some postcards. Hot chocolate was good and had toilets.

As many people do, we stopped off here on our trip to Latrabjarg Cliffs, and it was a great little place,. It was 1000 Krona to enter the main museum, small bit packed with interesting items. We watched the old film about the rescue of the ship that ran aground, really eye opening. A small cafe there also, I can't really comment on the food and drink as they were just opening for summer so the choice was tea or coffee, or a chocolate bar. The guy there was really chatty and told us loads about the place. Loved it.

This small museum is on the way to the bird cliffs. A US Navy plane sits in the yard. The 2 folks hosting told this is a collection of items one man had kept over the years as folks got rid of stuff, and he talked the local officials into building a museum to house it. So a wide assortment of items from fishing gear to household items. Also an exhibit on a rescue of a grounded British trawler from the 40's with the movie that was made. During filming (with many of the actual locals) another ship ran aground and they went to help, which provided scenes for the movie. The movie and many of the exhibit tags are in icelandic but the staff is very friendly and helpful.

There is a plane in pieces in the yard and a collection of items acquired by a local man over his lifetime. The most interesting thing is the sculpture on the hill above of a Viking ship coming out of a silver sphere, which is surrounded by a memorial to all the sailors that died in the area. The cafe is worth a stop.

We stopped at this museum on our way to the Bird Cliffs at Latrabjarg Peninsula. We were surprised to come upon it as the first thing we noticed was the US Navy airplane sitting just outside a storage shed by the museum! (We were told it was brought to the museum in 2004 after the US air base in Keflavik closed. It was transported over the narrow, rough mountain roads which must have been something to see! This is part of an aviation museum on the property which details the history of Iceland flying.) We decided to tour the main museum and found it housed an extensive collection of fishing equipment and other items used in the daily lives of local people in years gone by. The guide who was working was extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly. In addition to the artifacts on display were photographs and storyboards detailing the 1947 rescue of some shipwrecked British sailors by local farmers and fishermen. There was also a 45 minute film (in Icelandic) which reenacted the rescue which was quite impressive even though we couldn't understand the narrative! We had coffee and cakes served in the cafe area and were not disappointed by the quality! Everything about the museum was well done! A great place to stop, take in the local history and enjoy a treat before heading to the cliffs! (Restrooms are for the customers use only, so please be courteous and take time to enjoy this wonderful little place!
